Senior Salute: Lauryn Hill

Lauryn Hill sidebar Q&A

Throughout the spring and summer, we'll be honoring our senior student-athletes with a "Senior Salute" series. Today's featured senior is Lauryn Hill, a biology major from Liberty Township, Ohio. Hill is a member of the women's lacrosse team.

Q: Why did you choose to attend The College of Wooster?
A: I initially looked at Wooster just because it would give me the opportunity to play lacrosse. After taking a tour, I came to love the campus grounds and the opportunity, as well as the opportunity to do solo research through Independent Study.

Q: What does it mean to you to be a Fighting Scot student-athlete?
A: Being a student-athlete, like being involved with other groups on campus, gives a sense of community surrounding something you love. It's added so much to my college experience and growth as a person.

Q: What are some of your favorite memories as a student at The College of Wooster?
A: A lot of my favorite memories at the College surround time with my team. Pre-game traditions, post-game celebrations, team dinners, and even our warmups before games have all made playing that much more enjoyable.

Q: What's the best part about being a student-athlete at The College of Wooster?
A: The spring break trips are a personal favorite of mine. Every trip I've taken while at Wooster has been to some place I'd never gone before. I enjoyed exploring the new places with friends.

Q: What else were you involved with on campus besides your sport?
A: I didn't do much outside of lacrosse, but I was a member of the Black Student Association and Pi Kappa, and I was a teaching apprentice for my advisor.

Q: Which College of Wooster faculty or staff member has made the greatest impact on you and why?
A: Since taking her ecology course my junior year to becoming my I.S. advisor, Dr. (Jennifer) Ison has been of great help and encouragement, especially recently. Through the ups and downs of getting I.S. started and virtual learning, she's been a great support.

Q: What other people or resources impacted your Wooster experience in a positive way and how did these people/resources set you up to be successful at Wooster?
A: Dr. Laura Sirot, my initial advisor, helped me a lot as a first-year and sophomore. Dean Ashley Benson has also been a great support system for my friends and I. Coach Elizabeth Ford has also been a great influence on my Wooster experience with helping me build confidence on and off the field.

Q: Tell us a bit about your Independent Study project?
A: My I.S. uses microsatellite analysis to look at male fitness in the plant Echinacea angustifolia. I am also interested in the effects of different categories of pollinators on male fitness.

Q: Tell us a bit about something cool you did as a student at The College of Wooster?
A: Wooster often has visitors come to campus to speak or give performances, which has led to some really cool experiences. The most memorable of these are meeting Kareem Abdul-Jabbar as a first-year and hearing Pharrell Williams speak my junior year.

Q: Reflecting back on your time at Wooster, what advice you would give your first-year (freshman) self?
A: Open yourself up more to new experiences and people. Trust your instincts, but don't be afraid to take risks.
