Scots Survive Slow Start to Open NCAC East with 18-10 Win Over Allegheny

Alexa Mellis scored four goals Tuesday to lead the Scots to an NCAC East win.

MEADVILLE, Pa. – The College of Wooster women's lacrosse team bounced back from a 4-1 start to take an 18-10 win over Allegheny College on Tuesday in both team's first game in NCAC East play.

Senior Alexa Mellis and sophomore Jill Murray each scored four goals to lead the Scots. Senior Katie Shideler collected 12 saves in goal for the win.

It was sophomore Britta Treu who put the Scots on the board first before Allegheny ran off with four consecutive goals. However, Wooster responded with seven straight to go ahead 8-4 and would never lead the lose again.

In that span, sophomore Hannah Shaw started the scoring, while Murray scored three of her goals. Senior Miura Wiley scored on a free position shot, and classmate Katie Harvey scored the final two goals of the run.

Allegheny got on back with 2:24 remaining, but Wooster would score three more before the period would draw to a close. Mellis scored twice, and senior Ashley Boersma scored with 32 seconds left in the half.

Wooster took an 11-5 lead into halftime. Treu again got the scoring started in the second half. Mellis and Shaw each scored back-to-back goals. Boersma got on the board again and Murray closed scoring for the Scots.

Boersma finished with a game-high five assists, while Wiley finished with three. Sophomore Clare Leithauser had a team-high six ground balls. Murray and Wiley followed with five each.

Shaw led with four caused turnovers. Junior Tabitha Skornik-Hayes added three.

Wooster outshot the Gators 48-27. Wooster also took 16 draw controls to Allegheny's 13, and won the ground ball struggle 26-25.

Wooster moves to 2-1 overall and 1-0 in conference play. Allegheny falls to 1-2 and 0-1. The Scots took the prior meeting 19-11 at Allegheny in non-conference play on March 27.

Wooster will again face the Gators at 1 p.m. Saturday at Papp Stadium in another NCAC East contest.
