Tigers No Match for Scots, as Wooster Routs Wittenberg, 20-2

The College of Wooster women's lacrosse team overwhelmed Wittenberg University on both ends of the field, with the Fighting Scots upping the program's winning streak to seven games via a 20-2 rout at John P. Papp Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

Wooster's (7-1) defensive prowess resulted in the program allowing its fewest goals in a game since Hiram College mustered two during the Scots' 17-2 win over the Terriers back on April 13, 2019. The Scots' 10 caused turnovers in this one marked the most in the program's last four outings, and it's the fourth double-digit showing for Wooster this spring.

Two of those caused turnovers led directly to goals on Saturday. First, senior 'keeper Katie Shideler snuffed out an entry pass to the attacking end from Wittenberg's (0-10) Katie Wadds. The senior's interception, followed by precise transition passing down the field, resulted in sophomore Britta Treu scoring the Scots' first goal of the day at the 22:43 mark. In the second half, sophomore Clare Leithauser stepped in front of a Tiger pass during a clear try, and the defender went the distance, depositing her first career goal into the net with 12:19 remaining.

Wooster's balanced offense hit the 20-goal mark for the second time this season. Sophomore Jill Murray, senior Alexa Mellis, and Treu put four slashes each in the scoring column, while Murray added two assists for a game-high six points. The Scots' unselfishness and crisp passing resulted in 10 assists, and a near-60-percent assist mark on non-free-position scores.

Wooster, which led 8-2 at halftime, needed just 11 seconds in the second half for Mellis to net one of her co-game-high four scores, and that opened up a 12-0 run, with five of those goals coming in the first 6:45 of the half.

The Scots 10 caused turnovers were spread among seven players, with Leithauser, sophomore Hannah Shaw, and Shideler logging to each. Thirteen Scots scooped up at least one groundball, and the Scots were led there by Leithauser and Shideler, who had four apiece.

Shideler made four saves before giving way to junior CC Dent, who stopped two shots in the final 11:32.

Wittenberg's Abby Sammons was tested early and often in goal. She made 11 saves to headline the Tigers' efforts, with 10 of those coming in the first half. Katurah Emery scored both Tiger goals before exiting with a second yellow card just 1:31 into the second half.

Wooster outshot Wittenberg 40-14 and finished a groundball shy of doubling up (27-14) the Tigers. Wittenberg had 30 turnovers to Wooster's 18, and the Tigers were successful on just 11-of-24 clears.

Next, Wooster's at Oberlin College (2-1) for a 5 p.m. game on Wednesday, April 28.
