The Scots breathed a sigh of relief after Mellis's game-winner Wednesday.

OBERLIN, Ohio – The College of Wooster women's lacrosse team spoiled Oberlin College's season finale with a 17-16 overtime win on Wednesday.

Oberlin, who played just four games this season and ends the year at 2-2, put up a spirited effort against the Scots, who collected their eighth straight win.

Senior Alexa Mellis scored the deciding goal in overtime on a free position shot with 1:45 left in overtime.

Seven of Wooster's goals came in free position attempts. They were 7-of-15 for the game.

Mellis's final goal capped off a team-high five-goal performance. Classmates Katie Harvey and Ashley Boersma followed with three each.

Britta Treu and Jill Murray each scored a pair. Miura Wiley and Angelina Bolivar rounded out Wooster's scoring.

Boersma and Treu each led the team with three assists. Hannah Shaw led with 12 draw controls and tied for the team-lead of five groundballs with Clare Leithauser. Leithauser and Tabitha Skornik-Hayes also had three caused turnovers.

Oberlin's Tess Siciliano scored a game-high six goals.

Wooster found their best run of the game following a timeout and trailing 5-3 in the first half. Goals from Boersma, Wiley, Mellis, Treu and Murray put Wooster in front 8-5.

Wooster led 9-7 at halftime and held the lead until Oberlin knotted the game 12-12 with 17:54 remaining.

Oberlin later scored three straight to take a 16-14 lead with 2:39 remaining. Wooster, in need of quick goals, got one with a draw control win from Shaw and then a successful free position attempt from Treu.

Shaw then gave Wooster possession again, and it was Harvey scoring with 51 seconds left.

Senior Katie Shideler collected the win in net after making 12 saves. Her counterpart, Maranda Phillips, made 16 saves.

Wooster outshot Oberlin 40-33. Oberlin held the slight edge in groundballs 25-24, but Wooster won the draw control battle 21-15.

Wooster succeeded in 18-of-22 clear attempts. Oberlin finished at 21-of-32.

Wooster is now 8-1 and will next host the NCAC Championship game Saturday against ninth-ranked Denison. Denison (8-1) gave Wooster its lone loss of the year, a 22-9 defeat back in March.
