Wooster Opens Spring Trip With 23-9 Win

Britta Treu | College of Wooster lacrosse BIRMINGHAM, Alabama – Another monster first quarter set up The College of Wooster women's lacrosse team for success, and the Fighting Scots' offensive firepower was on display all night long in Tuesday's 23-9 win over Birmingham-Southern College.

Wooster (5-0), which logged a new season-high in goals, hung an 11-spot on Birmingham-Southern (5-4) in the opening period, and the Scots' balance was immediately evident. Six different Scots scored Wooster's first six goals. Junior Jill Murray was the first Scot with multiple scores, accomplishing that at the 8:59 mark, and she had a hat trick by period's end.

Sophomore Kenzie Smith scored just before halftime, and that score sparked the Scots for the second half. Wooster scored seven unanswered goals in the third period alone. Senior Syd Schuster's with 10:51 left upped the lead to 10, then Murray netted consecutive scores, bringing her total to a game-high five.

First-year Kenzie Morris backed Murray up in the scoring column with four goals. Others with hat tricks on the night included Schuster (four goals) and junior Hannah Shaw. The Scots logged assists on 12-of-23 goals, with junior Britta Treu's four leading the way. Shaw hit double-digit draw controls for the second time this year, finishing at 11. Junior Clare Leithauser's eight groundballs marked a career-high, while first-year Kaitlyn McBride paced the Scots with three caused turnovers.

Lizzie LaVangie's three goals led Birmingham-Southern.

Wooster finished with a 36-18 edge on shots, which included a 19-4 margin in the opening 15 minutes of action. The Scots had just three unsuccessful clear attempts in 23 tries, while the Panthers came in at 50 percent (15-of-30) for the night.
