Scots' Winning Streak Ends at Seven

Hannah Shaw, Wooster lacrosse GREENCASTLE, Indiana – The College of Wooster's season-opening winning streak was halted on Saturday afternoon, as DePauw University topped the Fighting Scots 16-5 in the teams' North Coast Athletic Conference women's lacrosse lid-lifter at Reavis Stadium.

Wooster (7-1, 0-1 NCAC), which started 7-0 for the third time since 2016, found a spark coming out of halftime. Draw controls, one area where Wooster did well statistically, enabled the Scots to have the first look in the third. Sophomore Ciara O'Connor scored to make it 9-2, then classmate Kenzie Smith buried a free-position shot at the 12:15 mark, trimming the deficit to six. DePauw (5-1, 1-0 NCAC) responded with a pair of goals of its own, and Bria Randolph's score just before the buzzer had the host Tigers up 13-5, and all but sealed the victory.

DePauw, which led 4-1 after the first, capitalized in the second, outscoring Wooster 5-0 to take a commanding 9-1 lead into halftime. Three of the Tigers' second-period scores came on player-up situations, and the Tigers outshot the Scots 14-6 in the stanza.

Two areas – possession and opponents' clearing rate – where Wooster has enjoyed much success of late, were focal points in Saturday's outcome. Wooster had 28 turnovers to DePauw's 19 and the Scots were just 9-of-17 on clear attempts.

First-year Kenzie Morris scored two of Wooster's five goals. Junior Hannah Shaw and senior Tabitha Skornik-Hayes shared high honors in groundballs at three, and junior Clare Leithauser accounted for two of the Scots' four caused turnovers. Of note, Shaw collected 10 draw controls, giving her 69 through eight games, one shy of the career-high 70 logged last season. Shaw now has 168 in just 23 games, a total sixth in program history and three shy of a top-five ranking.

Lydia Hollins was a hero for DePauw, stopping 13 shots on the afternoon. Randolph led the offense with five assists and two goals, while Emily Howard was a defensive menace, thanks to six groundballs and four of the Tigers' 15 caused turnovers.

DePauw outshot Wooster 33-27 and had 21 groundballs to the Scots' 18. Wooster did enjoy a sizable 18-7 edge in draw controls.

Wooster will try to regroup for a 7 p.m. home date with Adrian College (3-3) on Thursday, March 31.
