O'Connor Beats Buzzer in OT to Send Scots Home Winners

Caitlyn O'Connor, Wooster Lacrosse DELAWARE, Ohio – Senior Caitlyn O'Connor batted the overtime game-winner into the goal with her lacrosse head at the buzzer, to give The College of Wooster women's lacrosse team its second-straight 13-12 overtime win. Wednesday's victory came over Ohio Wesleyan University at Selby Stadium.

Wooster (10-1, 2-1 North Coast Athletic Conference) had just :15 to work with at the end of overtime, with sophomore Angelina Bolivar gaining possession via a groundball in the defensive end. Senior Syd Schuster had the first look at the final-seconds-victory, getting a shot off with approximately :03 on the clock. Ohio Wesleyan (10-2, 0-2 NCAC) goalkeeper Abby Markowitz denied Schuster the opportunity for back-to-back overtime winners. Schuster's shot remained in play, with the rebound just in front of the goal. There, O'Connor was first to it, and knocked it in at the buzzer.

Wooster had its hands full in overtime, with Ohio Wesleyan outshooting the Scots 8-2 ahead of O'Connor's winner. Four of the Battling Bishops' shots were free-position attempts, and Ohio Wesleyan managed just one on target. That came with 1:25 remaining in overtime, and it was stopped by Wooster senior CC Dent, who finished with seven saves.

In the fourth period, consecutive goals by junior Hannah Shaw gave Wooster a 12-11 edge with 8:54 on the clock. Ohio Wesleyan's Nicole Klabus put in goal 44 of the year at the 5:29 mark to tie the game.

Later, sophomore Ciara O'Connor caused a Sophia DelGallo turnover that was scooped up by Schuster. Wooster was inside the eight-meter in the closing seconds of regulation, but turned the ball over before getting a shot off.

Shaw and first-year Kenzie Morris scored three goals each, while junior Jill Murray filled out the sheet with twos in each points-awarding column. Schuster and Shaw tracked down seven draw controls apiece, junior Clare Leithauser took co-high honors for the game in groundballs at six, and Shaw was credited with four of the Scots' 11 caused turnovers.

Klabus and Evie Williams scored three times each for Ohio Wesleyan, Markowitz matched Leithauser with six groundballs, and Amara Carlson and Williams caused four turnovers each. Markowitz's night also included 12 saves.

Ohio Wesleyan outshot Wooster 32-39 and had an ever-so-slight 28-27 groundball margin. Wooster did continue to separate itself substantially in draw controls, this time going 20-for-29. The Battling Bishops committed 24 turnovers to the Scots' 31.

Of note, Wooster is now 3-0 in overtime games this year.

Next, archrival Wittenberg University (5-6, 0-1 NCAC) heads to Wooster to take on the Scots at 1 p.m. on Saturday, April 9.
