Senior Salute - Hannah Shaw

Hannah Shaw Q&A Throughout the spring semester, we are honoring our senior student-athletes with a "Senior Salute" series. Today's featured senior is Hannah Shaw, a psychology major from Menlo Park, California. Shaw is a member of the women's lacrosse team.

Q: Why did you choose to attend The College of Wooster?
A: I chose to attend The College of Wooster because I really enjoyed the student culture and connections that people make with each other. I was also impressed with the support that comes from the staff and faculty that is given to students, and especially student-athletes. Programs and departments like APEX (Wooster's center for Advising, Planning, and Experiential Learning) and the ARC(Academic Resource Center) were influential in my decision to come here. I also had the opportunity to meet the current members of the team who would eventually become teammates during my visits to campus.

Q: What does being a Fighting Scot student-athlete mean to you?
A: To me, being a Fighting Scot student-athlete means that I get to play with a team who wants to get better every day we play together and enjoys the sport as much as I do. The support that comes from teammates and other student-athletes is what makes athletics at The College of Wooster fun and enjoyable.

Q: What are some of your favorite memories as a student at The College of Wooster?
A: Some of my favorite memories as a student at The College of Wooster have been getting to play with teammates who are also my friends. I have loved spending my free time with friends and getting to grow with them as people.

Q: What is the best part about being a student-athlete at The College of Wooster?
A: The best part about being a student-athlete at The College of Wooster is getting to play a college sport where I can also focus on academics and participate in other groups and clubs on campus.

Q: What else were you involved with on campus besides your sport?
A: I am a peer mentor, which means I help first-year students adjust to life at the College by answering questions they may have about life at the College and guiding them through new processes like registering for classes.

Q: Which College of Wooster faculty or staff member has made the greatest impact on you and why?
A: Kate Gullattafrom the Academic Resource Center has had the greatest impact on me because she helped me improve my time management, organizational skills, and academic performance. She has been my biggest cheerleader and has been a person who has kept me accountable.

Q: What other people or resources impacted your Wooster experience in a positive way and how did these people and resources set you up to be successful at Wooster?
A: My coach (Elizabeth Ford) and Independent Study advisor (Dr. Amber Garcia) have impacted my time here at Wooster. These two people have kept me accountable in my academics and have greatly improved my work ethic.

Q: Tell us a bit about your Independent Study project?
A: My I.S. project is an experimental study using a survey which examines social perceptions and attitudes towards youth athletes with ADHD. I am also measuring if there are differences in perceptions based on gender or whether the athlete is labeled as having ADHD or not.

Q: Tell us a bit about something cool you did as a student at The College of Wooster?
A: Something cool I did as a student here was playing in the North Coast Athletic Conference Tournament championship as a sophomore. It was one of the most fun and competitive games I have played personally and with a team.

Q: Reflecting back on your time at Wooster, what is one piece of advice you would give your first-year (freshman) self?
A: One piece of advice I would give to my first-year self would be to buy a planner and use it.
