Scots Take Care of Blue Streaks with 9-0 Second-Half Run

Jill Murray, Wooster Lacrosse WOOSTER, Ohio – Nine unanswered goals were scored by The College of Wooster women's lacrosse team at the start of Wednesday night's second half, and that stretch enabled the Fighting Scots to pull away from visiting John Carroll University in a 14-8 lid-lifting win at John P. Papp Stadium.

Sophomore Kenzie Morris, who tied for the team lead with four goals, found the back of the net three times during the run. The midfielder's second score of the night tied the game at five at the 13:10 mark of the third, and she struck again with 10:39 remaining. Later, senior Britta Treu fed the ball to Morris for the sophomore's final goal of the night, with that tally making it an 11-5 game. Goals by Treu and a free-position goal by senior Jill Murray put the game out of reach with 11:01 left.

John Carroll (0-1) managed just five shots during its 19:57 second-half scoring drought, and possession opportunities were very limited for the Blue Streaks. Morris knocked possession away from John Carroll's Mary Doherty right after tying the score at five, and first-year Lizzie Hardy scooped up the groundball. Shortly after, senior Hannah Shaw found first-year Brynne Snaguski, whose first collegiate goal was a go-ahead one.

John Carroll turned the ball over four other times before scoring in the second half. Sophomore Ashlyn Casey, sophomore Lexi Sarne, and first-year Sidney O'Rourke cleaned up the miscues, winning groundballs for the Scots.

Wooster converted four of its five free-position shots on the night. Three of the makes came from Murray, who matched Morris for high honors in the scoring column. Shaw put home the fourth free-position goal, with that tying the game at four at the second period's 8:37 mark.

Shaw claimed high point scorer honors with five, at three goals and two assists. Hardy tracked down four draw controls, senior Clare Leithauser was credited with three of Wooster's nine caused turnovers, and the senior defender also led the team with four groundballs. Sophomore Ashley Reynolds, who played as a field player as a first-year, made her collegiate debut at goalkeeper and made six saves.

Shannon Burdick and Olivia Gerlach scored two goals apiece for John Carroll. Doherty's six draw controls led all players, while Lainey Donalson caused three turnovers for the Blue Streaks. Josephine Lawler and Olivia Munding combined for 10 saves.

Wooster outshot John Carroll 29-22 and had 23 groundballs to the Blue Streaks 15.

Next, Wooster is at Westminster College (Pa.) (0-2) for a 6:30 p.m. game on Wednesday, March 1.
