Seniors Lead Scots to Latest 18-7 Victory

Clare Leithauser, Wooster lacrosse WOOSTER, Ohio – The opponent was different, yet the final score was the same – an 18-7 win for The College of Wooster women's lacrosse team, which pulled away from visiting Trine University on Saturday afternoon at John P. Papp Stadium.

Wooster, now 4-0, won its second straight game by an 18-7 ledger and gradually pulled away from a Trine (2-2) team it needed overtime to beat last year. Wooster's five seniors, who were recognized prior to the game, scored 11 of the goals, including five of the first six. Senior Hannah Shaw's score with 2:31 remaining in the first put the Fighting Scots up for good, then classmate Jill Murray found the back of the net twice in a 21-second span of the second to make it 6-2. Britta Treu fired in her third goal of the day at the fourth period's 11:56 mark for the final score by the senior class.

Sophomore Lexi Sarne fueled the defensive efforts with six caused turnovers and six groundballs on the afternoon. Sarne had five instances of immediately getting the groundball after the caused turnover, while the sixth time, the groundball went to sophomore goalkeeper Ashley Reynolds.

The middle periods are where Saturday's game was won, as Wooster outscored Trine 12-3 over quarters two and three. That included two 3-0 runs in the second stanza and a 6-0 stretch in the third that was capped off by Treu finding Shaw with seconds on the game clock.

Wooster won 18 draw controls to Trine's 10, and first-year Lizzie Hardy was the frequent victor, getting to as many as the Thunder did collectively. Shaw followed with four draw controls and sophomore Kenzie Morris chipped in three. Morris and Murray shared the team-high with four goals, and senior Clare Leithauser matched Sarne at six groundballs.

Calista Richmond accounted for almost the entirety of Trine's offense, playing a role in six of the seven scores with five goals and an assist. Maddy Kasten played well in goal, facing 43 shots, of which she saved 19.

Wooster's 43 shots were 27 more than Trine's tally, while the Scots more than doubled up the Thunder in groundballs at 32-14. Wooster had just 15 turnovers and forced Trine into a near-33 percent mark in clearing at 10-of-28.

Next, Wooster kicks off its three-game spring break trip with a stop at Marietta College (3-2). Opening draw is set for 6 p.m. on Wednesday, March 15.
