Treu Breaks Single-Season Assists Record Against OWU

Lizzie Hardy, Wooster Lacrosse SHREVE, Ohio – Senior Britta Treu took down a 21-year-old College of Wooster women's lacrosse single-season record during Wednesday night's 7-6 loss against Ohio Wesleyan University at Triway High School.

Treu entered the day with 37 assists, one shy of W Association Hall of Famer Beth Hemminger's 38, which stood atop the program record board since 2002. The senior pulled into a tie with the Wooster legend on junior Kenzie Smith's goal with 10:12 remaining in the second that had Wooster (10-5, 1-4 North Coast Athletic Conference) within 3-2. The record was officially broken with 10:06 left in the NCAC tilt, as senior Jill Murray scored her 96th collegiate goal in what marked the final score on the day by either team.

Wooster, which needed to win to stay alive for a hopeful spot in next week's NCAC Tournament, had several chances to tie the game late. The final ones came within the final 40 seconds of the clash. Senior Hannah Shaw's shot with 39 ticks remaining went just wide of the goal, then the Scots were unable to connect on a pass to a cutter. Ohio Wesleyan's (11-5, 4-2 NCAC) Abby Markowitz collected the groundball with about 25 seconds remaining and the Battling Bishops maintained possession the rest of the way.

Sophomore Ashley Reynolds' career-high 11 saves kept Wooster in the game, especially late. The sophomore turned aside a Sophia DelGallo shot with 7:16 remaining, then denied a free-position attempt by Nicole Klabus at the 5:16 mark.

Wooster never led in the game, but did have a strong showing down the stretch, keeping Ohio Wesleyan off the scoreboard in the fourth period. Sophomore Kenzie Morris continued to close in on 50 goals for the year with number 47 at the 13:26 mark of the fourth period. The NCAC's leading scorer had a team-high two goals on the night and was the lone Scot with multiple goals.

Grace Egan scored three times to lead Ohio Wesleyan. Abbie Grogan was the defensive superstar with five groundballs and four caused turnovers. Abby Markowitz matched Reynolds with 11 saves.

First-year Lizzie Hardy was the aggressor in the midfield and when it came to drawing charges. She finished with five caused turnovers on the night, while as a team, Wooster tallied 17, with Shaw adding three and senior Clare Leithauser causing two to go with the team-high five groundballs.

Team statistics were pretty even across the board. OWU finished with a slight edge in shots (25-22), groundballs (24-22), and draw controls (10-7). The teams had 26 turnovers apiece. A good number came on clearing attempts, as Ohio Wesleyan was 20-for-33 and Wooster checked in at 18-for-24.

Of note, the game marked the first involving Wooster where neither team reached 10 goals since the Scots played at Pomona Pitzer in 2018.

Wooster's season will conclude at Oberlin College (7-8, 1-4 NCAC). Opening draw on Saturday, April 29 in set for 1 p.m.
