Smith Scores Game Winner in Double Overtime Win over Oberlin

OBERLIN - Junior Kenzie Smith sent the College of Wooster women's lacrosse team out on a high note as she scored the winning goal in double overtime to beat Oberlin College 17-16 at the Austin E. Knowlton Athletics Complex.

Smith finished with three goals, including the eventual game winner, while sophomore Kenzie Morris led the way for the Scots with a career-high tying seven-goal performance. Morris concludes the 2023 campaign with 54 goals on the season, making her the first Scot since Alexa Mellis in 2019 to surpass the 50 goal mark, and now ranks seventh all-time in single season goals.

Senior Britta Treu added one goal and three assists, finishing her career fourth in program history with 77 career assists.

The Yeowomen got going early and built up to a 5-3 lead after one period. However, Wooster had their number in the second quarter, doubling up on Oberlin as eight different Scots got involved in the scoring action.

Morris also netted her first two goals of the afternoon, helping Wooster to a 9-8 lead at intermission.

Oberlin doubled up the Scots in the third period and spanned a 4-0 run across the final two periods of regulation for a 14-11 lead. Wooster did not back down as Morris and senior Hannah Shaw combined for a 4-0 run of their own in just over one minute to eventually take a 16-15 lead.

A free position goal for Oberlin's Abbie Patchen tied things up with 3:16 remaining and inevitably sent the game into overtime.

The first overtime proved to be a stalemate. However, the Scots had two good back-to-back shots by Morris and sophomore Kaitlyn McBride late in the extra frame but could not find the back of the net.

Sophomore Ashley Reynolds made a crucial save early in the second overtime to preserve the game. However, it wasn't until the final minute that the game-winning sequence came together.

First-year Lizzie Hardy caused a turnover and grabbed the ground ball that led to the Wooster clear. Treu then connected with Smith for the game-winning goal with only 43 seconds left.

Reynolds made eight stops on the afternoon, including two during the overtime periods, to pick up the win. Hardy recorded a team-high five ground balls and a team-high tying three caused turnovers.

Oberlin held the advantage in ground balls (27-21), saves (20-8) and caused turnovers (11-9). Meanwhile, Wooster outshot the Yeowomen 44-30 and had two fewer turnovers.

Patchen led the way for the Yeowomen with her own seven-goal performance while Megan Hiller tallied a hat trick. Janny McCormick made all 20 saves in the cage for Oberlin.

Wooster concludes the 2023 season with an 11-5 record and a mark of 2-4 in the North Coast Athletic Conference.
