WOOSTER, Ohio – The College of Wooster scored three goals
during a 17:35 stretch of the first half Saturday afternoon en
route to a convincing 4-0 victory over Washington & Jefferson
College in a non-league women's soccer clash at Carl Dale
Memorial Field.
The match-up figured to be close with the two teams entering with a
combined 13-3 record. After an early push by Washington &
Jefferson (6-3) that featured a series of shots on goal during the
opening 10 minutes, though, it was all Wooster (8-1).
All three goals in the first half came on crosses from the right
side. First, Chantal Koechli sent a ball into the box where Kate
Kiley and a defender for the Presidents both went up for it. There
was a lot of contact, but Kiley managed to head the ball in for her
team-leading fifth goal at the 17:56 mark. Just 4:22 later, Maggie
Kehm dribbled down the right side and passed it to the left where a
pair of Fighting Scots were located, with Koechli sticking her foot
on the ball for the score. Koechli increased her season point total
to 15 (four goals, seven assists).
Wooster added another before the half was up, as Amanda Klump
centered a pass to Mary Riney, who was right in front of the goal
mouth and tapped it in during the 36th minute. That marked the
freshman's first collegiate score.
In the second half, the Scots continued to dominate the action and
eventually tacked on a fourth goal, using the combination of Riney
and Klump again. This time, during the 86th minute, Riney made a
run into the box from the left side and drove a shot to the far
post. The goalkeeper initially saved it, but was unable to control
the ball and Klump volleyed in the rebound for the score –
also the first of her career.
Wooster used three goalies on the day, as Alix Hoffman, Sara
Flannelly, and Caitlin Zusy combined for the shutout. Hoffman had
four saves in the first half and Flannelly made a diving stop to
her right in the second to preserve the goose egg.
Next, the Scots close their 10-game non-conference schedule with a
trip to John Carroll University (6-1-2) Tuesday night.
