Women’s Tennis Rallies to Avenge Earlier Season Loss

Kim Nguy?n GRANVILLE – The College of Wooster women's tennis team advanced from its North Coast Athletic Conference Tournament Quarterfinal matchup on Friday with a thrilling 5-4 win over Oberlin College.

The match came down to the No. 4 singles flight between Kim Nguyen and Lydia Zafeiri.

After splitting the first two sets, the match moved inside during the third due to weather, but Nguyen got the job done with a 7-6 (4), 4-6, 6-4 win.

This was Nguyen's second win over Zafeiri after winning 6-1, 6-1 in the prior matchup in March. In that one, Oberlin left with a 5-4 victory.

And just like in their prior matchup, Wooster was awarded three forfeit victories at No. 3 doubles, No. 5 singles and No. 6 singles.

Wooster opened losing the top two doubles flights.

The No. 1 team of Janaki Jagannathan and Otilia Oita took a tough loss, falling 8-7 (4). The duo was up 6-2 at one point but lost five straight games and had to force the tiebreaker down 7-6.

In the No. 2 match, Oberlin's Dina Nouaime and Zafeiri defeated Katie Materick and Abby Williams 8-3. Nouaimie and Zafeiri broke serve to go ahead 4-2 and kept enough distance for the win.

Needing just two singles wins, Oita was the first singles point for Wooster in a 6-2, 7-6 (5) win in the No. 2 slot.

Jagannathan fell in the No. 1 slot 6-1, 6-0, and Charitha Patlolla lost at the No. 3 position 6-2, 7-5.

The Scots will now square up with No. 1 seeded Kenyon College on Saturday in the semifinal. The 32nd-ranked Owls won the regular season matchup 9-0.

The other match Saturday will feature second seed Denison University and third seed Wittenberg University. On Friday, Denison defeated Ohio Wesleyan University 5-0, and Wittenberg beat DePauw University 5-2.
