Scots Fall in Opening Quarterfinal Round of NCAC Tournament

The fifth-seeded College of Wooster women's tennis team tried for the upset as host of the North Coast Athletic Conference Championships this weekend but ultimately fell to fourth-seeded DePauw University in the quarterfinals on Friday, 5-0.

Wooster's brand-new tennis courts were on display as the team welcomed six other NCAC teams to compete in this year's championships. In the three quarterfinals matches on Friday, the lower seed won by a score of 5-0.

Wooster was competitive in their doubles matches but just fell on the wrong end of each. The No. 1 team of Janaki Jagannathan and Otilia Oita as well as the No. 2 team of Abby Aitken and Margaret Steward each fell 8-6. The No. 3 team of Abby Williams and Sarah Mashaal lost 8-4.

That meant DePauw needed just two singles wins to claim victory. They got their fourth point early in a 6-0, 6-0 win at the No. 6 flight before wrapping up the match with a 6-0, 6-2 win at No. 4.

Of the unfinished matches, Oita came back for a 7-5 first set win in her No. 1 flight, while Jagannathan was in a 5-4 deficit in her first set at No. 2.

Aitken at No. 3 and Mashaal at No. 5 were both battling in the second set after falling in the first.

Wooster wraps up its season at 5-14.

In the other matches on Friday, No. 2 Denison defeated No. 7 Oberlin 5-0. No. 3 Wittenberg defeated No. 6 Ohio Wesleyan by the same score.

The tournament continues with the semifinals on Saturday. DePauw will face Kenyon and Wittenberg will take on Denison with both matches scheduled to start at 11 a.m.
