Fitzcharles Surpasses 1,000 Career Digs as Scots Exit Mount Union Invite

Sydney Fitzcharles The College of Wooster volleyball team fell 3-1 to both 17th-ranked Otterbein University and Alma College on Saturday to conclude the Mount Union Invitational.

For Wooster, Sydney Fitzcharles entered 22 digs shy of 1,000 for her career and surpassed the feat against Alma. She recorded 14 against Otterbein and then 11 against Alma.

She also was named to the All-Tournament Team.

Otterbein (4-0), who advanced to last year's NCAA Round of 16, won 25-15, 22-25, 25-21, 25-20. They showed little rust in the first set, pulling ahead 6-1.

However, in the second set, Wooster turned the tides with a 5-0 start with Fitzcharles at the serve. Otterbein made it a challenge midway through, eventually getting the advantage at 15-16.

A kill from Emily Gail made it 18-18, and Wooster took advantage of two straight attack errors to go up 20-18. From there, they kept the lead, with strong play from Nash and a set ending kill from Tamara Turner.

In the third set, the teams tied at 9, 10, 11, 12 and 13 until Otterbein took the slight advantage for the rest of the set. In the fourth, the Cardinals gained a little cushion in the early goings and kept the slight lead throughout.

Nash finished with a team-high 14 kills and 16 digs. Caroline Dillard scored eight kills and Gail had seven.

Alma (1-3) won after falling in the first set 23-25, 27-25, 25-20, 25-17.

Wooster actually trailed late in the first set but had a five-point swing to tie the set at 21. From there, Dilard scored a pair of points, Nash recorded a kill and Wooster won the set on an attack error.

Nash again led the team with a game-high 13 kills. She also recorded a team-high 12 digs. Tyara Thompson recorded 30 assists.

Wooster (0-3) returns to action Wednesday when they host Capital University in its home opener at Timken Gymnasium.
