Nash, Thompson Open Home Slate With Double-Double

Hayley Nash, Wooster volleyball WOOSTER, Ohio – Capital University spoiled The College of Wooster volleyball team's home opener by taking an exciting, tightly-contested match 25-20, 20-25, 25-18, 25-22 on Wednesday evening at Timken Gymnasium.

Wooster (0-4) senior Hayley Nash led all players with 19 kills. She was featured prominently in the second set, which was won by the Fighting Scots. Nine of Nash's kills came in that frame. The Scots' returning first-team all-conference performer was unstoppable in crunch time, with six of those kills coming during Wooster's 9-0 set-closing run. Sophomore Tamara Turner tied the score at 20, and Wooster received a kill from junior Trinity Harmon out of the back row during the run. The Scots' converted at a .394 rate in the attacking percentage department in the second set, and had 15 kills on 33 swings with just two attack errors. Defensively, the Scots held the Comets (2-3) to a .158 mark in the second set, in part due to six digs by senior Sydney Fitzcharles and five by junior Tyara Thompson.

Nash (18 digs) and Thompson (35 assists, 14 digs) logged double-doubles on the night. Fitzcharles took top honors with 23 digs, while Wooster had four Scots above 10 digs, with Harmon rounding out the quartet at 15.

Alissa Holler's 13 kills led Capital, which also had 11 kills from Larissa Smith and 10 from Simone Daniel.

Wooster was in the mix in the other three sets. The Scots nearly overcame a 13-4 first-set deficit. A bad set by the Comets' Jordyn Hoffman had the Scots within 22-18, and consecutive attack errors by Capital pulled Wooster within 23-20. Tuner and Nash blocked Daniel in the fourth set, with that point making it 20 all. Nash tied the score at 21 before back-to-back Capital blocks swung the momentum in the Comets' favor.

Next, Wooster competes in the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association/North Coast Athletic Conference Crossover. The Scots are off to Trine University for three matches, starting with Friday's 7:30 p.m. match against Adrian College (3-2).
