Scots Win Electric Third Set But Can’t Extend Match to Five

Troy Johnson The College of Wooster volleyball team played an energized third set but could not carry that momentum over in a 3-1 loss (25-15, 25-15, 18-25, 25-16) to Ohio Wesleyan University on Wednesday.

Wooster played evenly with Ohio Wesleyan to begin the first two sets but lost steam midway in both.

In the first set, Ohio Wesleyan had a three-point swing to move ahead 15-9. Wooster got two back, but the Battling Bishops came back to win another four to go up 19-11. They then won five of the last six points, including the last three.

In set two, Wooster trailed 12-11 but seven straight points was too much to overcome as Ohio Wesleyan took another 19-11 lead.

In the third set, Wooster turned the tables, trailing 11-9 before taking nine straight for an 18-11 lead. Troy Johnson helped ignite the rally with two blocks and a kill, while Hayley Nash scored three consecutive kills to end the run.

The energy from the third set failed to carry over in the fourth, as Ohio Wesleyan jumped out to an 8-3 lead. However, Wooster fought back from 21-9 to make it a 25-16 final set.

Senior Emily Gail led the squad with 12 kills, two short of the game-high 14 from Ohio Wesleyan's Melissa Murray.

Sydney Fitzcharles led the Scots with 15 digs. Nash added 10 kills and 13 digs. Tyara Thompson recorded 30 assists.

Wooster is now 3-12 overall and 0-4 in NCAC play. Ohio Wesleyan improves to 8-10 overall and 3-1 in conference action.

Wooster will travel to Hiram College on Saturday.
