Volleyball Eliminated from NCAC Tournament

Volleyball team SPRINGFIELD -- There was no Cinderella story for The College of Wooster volleyball team in this year's North Coast Athletic Conference Tournament after falling to Kenyon College 3-1 (25-22, 25-27, 25-20, 25-18) in the first round Friday night.

Sixth-seeded Wooster was hoping to replicate its run from last year's tournament when they reached the title match for the first time since 1985. However, this year they failed to escape the first round against a team they beat earlier this year 3-1.

In the previous meeting, Wooster set the tone by winning the first set. Kenyon took the second set, but Wooster finished strong by taking the final two sets.

The roles were reversed Friday as Kenyon, who entered as the seventh seed, took the important first set. Wooster needed 27 points to tie the match at one, but the Scots could not carry that momentum into the third and fourth sets.

Kenyon trailed 19-17 in the opening set, before closing on an 8-3 run. In set two, Wooster led 17-12 before a strong push from Kenyon, but finished strong to take it 27-25.

The third set was another close one with Wooster leading 16-14 near the midway point. Kenyon then won four straight and never lost the lead.

In set four, Kenyon went up early and never let off the gas. They led 10-5 and later 20-13. Wooster, facing the deciding match point, tallied off three straight points, but Kenyon (5-20) clinched the match with a kill from Maggie Wolf.

The senior Hayley Nash led the match with 13 kills. Amelia Mitchell followed with 11. Senior Emily Gail and Tamara Turner each collected eight.

Senior Sydney Fitzcharles scored a match-high 20 digs, and Tyara Thompson had a match-high 44 assists.

Wooster concludes the year at 7-16.
