Volleyball Goes 2-0 to End Kentucky Trip

Caroline Dillard, Wooster volleyball BEREA, Ky. -- The College of Wooster volleyball team finished its two-day trip in Kentucky strong, winning both of its matches on Saturday, defeating Asbury University 3-1 (25-15, 25-22, 21-25, 25-22) and the University of Lynchburg 3-2 (26-24, 16-25, 12-25, 25-23, 15-8).

Against Asbury, Wooster put forth a balanced attack with a team-high nine kills from three players in seniors Ty ThompsonTroy Johnson and first-year Jordan Laraway. Senior Caroline Dillard finished with eight kills, while junior Amelia Mitchell collected six.

Emma Fleck recorded a team-high 20 assists, while Thompson followed with 12. Senior Trinity Harmon led with 15 digs, and junior Tamara Turner collected 11 digs and a game-high five service aces.

Wooster grew a steady lead in the first set after falling behind 3-0 early. Once they adjusted, Wooster took four straight points to go ahead 4-3 and later led at points 9-6, 14-9 and 18-11.

Additionally, the Scots took the final five points of the set with Thompson serving.

In the second set, the teams were knotted at 10 before Asbury scored three straight in an attempt to pull ahead. However, Wooster scored the next three to spark a 9-3 run that led to the 25-22 second set win.

After Asbury took the third, the two teams played mostly even in the fourth as they tied at 20 late. Wooster gained three straight points to get a comfortable lead and ended the match with a kill from Dillard. 

Dillard and Johnson each collected five kills in the final set.

Versus Lynchburg, Dillard and Turner reached double digits in kills with 14 and 12, respectively. The first-year Fleck reached a new high with 32 assists, and Turner led the team with 31 digs.

The Scots won a 26-24 first set but suffered setbacks in the next two, scoring a combined 28 points between the two. However, Wooster switched gears midway through the fourth to take control.

They trailed 10-5 but was able to tie the set at 13. Lynchburg then led at 18-15, but Wooster tied it at 19. The teams tied again at 21 and 23, but Dillard scored two kills to keep Wooster alive in the game.

The fifth set was all Wooster after a five-point run broke a 3-3 tie. Wooster led 10-4 and eventually took the set 15-8 for the win. Dillard collected a pair of service aces to fuel the fifth set, while Turner had three kills in the set.

Next, Wooster will travel to John Carroll University on Wednesday before hosting the NCAC/MIAA Crossover the following weekend.
