Scots Fall in NCAC Opener

Fleck serving The College of Wooster volleyball team faced off against Hiram College on Saturday in the North Coast Athletic Conference opener as the Terriers took a 3-0 match (25-17, 25-21, 25-12) from the Scots.

Wooster never really got established as Hiram opened up to a 9-4 lead in the opening set after four straight points, three of which being Wooster errors. Hiram led 20-12 before Wooster amounted a late comeback with three straight points of their own.

However, the teams would trade points, and Hiram would score the last three to win the first set 25-17.

Set two was Wooster's best, but they had to dig out of a 11-4 hole as unforced errors again hurt the Scots. At 16-10, Wooster would manage a streak of six straight points to tie the match, led by four kills in that span from Caroline Dillard

The teams went back and forth until tied again at 21. However, four attack errors concluded the set, as Hiram won 25-21.

Wooster (6-6, 0-1 NCAC) got off to a better start in the third set, trailing 8-6, but a five-point run from Hiram (5-10, 1-0 NCAC) gave the Terriers all the distance they needed. They eventually went up 20-7 before taking the set and the match at 25-12.

Dillard and Amelia Mitchell led the Scots with nine kills each. Emma Fleck led the team with 15 assists, and Trinity Harmon collected a team-high 16 digs.

Hiram was led by a 12-kill match from Emily Richardson and 20 digs from Claire Brunner.

Wooster will look to bounce back next weekend when they host DePauw University in another NCAC matchup, and Otterbein University in a non-conference affair.
