Wooster Women Finish Fifth, Men Ninth at Otterbein Invitational

The College of Wooster cross country teams both posted their most notable results to date Saturday, as the women finished in fifth-place out of 18 schools and the men were ninth in a field of 17 at the Otterbein Invitational.

Highlighting the women for the second time this fall was Meredith Shaul, who covered the 5K course in 19:16.0, which was good for a 10th-place finish. Just behind were Erin Plews-Ogan in 19th-place (19:24.4) and Sarah Appleton in 24th (19:29.9). Monica Ramstad, Alyssa Getta, Chelsea Denlinger, and Colleen O'Neil rounded out Wooster's scorers, placing in 42nd (20:14.2), 49th (20:22.9), 50th (20:24.1), and 56th (20:35.1), respectively.

The women (144 points) were just 40 points behind third-place DePauw University (104), while Ashland University (40) went on to claim the team championship. The Scots were ahead of such schools as 7th-place University of Mount Union (208) and North Coast Athletic Conference rival Wittenberg University (408) which finished 15th.

The men recorded 256 points, which also bested Wittenberg (444), but it was once again Ashland (40) that took first-place in the event. Leading Wooster's male harriers was Luke Hutching-Goetz's 32nd-place run of 27:08.9, while Kevin DeGroot (28:01.6) and Micah Caunter (28.09.5) took 49th and 51st, respectively. Also scoring in the 8k event was Jay Marshall, who took 61st (28:26.1), Morgan Clark, who finished 63rd (28:34.2), Casey Green, who crossed 65th (28:38.5), and Sam Swartz's 79th-place (29:25.8) effort.

Wooster will be in action next at the All-Ohio Championships on Friday at Cedarville, Ohio.
