Both College of Wooster cross country teams launched their 2011 seasons Thursday evening, as the Fighting Scots hosted the annual Wooster Invitational, which included northeast Ohio schools Baldwin-Wallace College, Hiram College, Lorain County Community College, Oberlin College, and Urbana University. The non-scoring meet featured individuals competing in four different events, a women's 4K and women's 5K, as well as a men's 5K and men's four mile run.

Highlighting the women's efforts was the trio of Meredith Shaul, Colleen O'Neil, and Sarah Appleton, who each finished among the leaders in the 5K. Shaul paced the group with a second-place finish in 20:27.11, which was less than five seconds behind the winner. Crossing the finish line moments later were O'Neil (20:38.06) and Appleton (20:53.92), who placed fourth and seventh, respectively.

Freshman Lauren Buyan also made her mark in the women's 4K, as the newcomer took fourth-place in 16:17.06.

On the men's side, Kevin DeGroot led the way by nabbing second in the challenging four mile run with a time of 21:57.33. Also recording top-10 finishes were Luke Hutchings-Goetz in sixth-place (22:48.51) and Sam Swartz in ninth (23:09.04).

Next up, the Scots will compete in the Great Lakes Colleges Association Championships Sept. 10.
