Callender, Tharenos Claim First Place in Twilight 5K

DeLong, Callender The College of Wooster men's and women's cross country team hosted its annual Twilight 5K Challenge Friday night.

The non-scoring event featured runners visiting from Allegheny College, Kenyon College and Oberlin College.

In the women's 5K, Wooster took the top three spots and was led by overall winner sophomore Athena Tharenos. Tharenos ran a time of 18:16.2 for an average mile of 5:52.5.

First-year Dylan Kretchmar followed at 18:27.1 and coming up in third was senior Kayla Bertholf in 18:52.7.

Senior Rachel Osterhouse finished ninth (20:08.5) as the only other Fighting Scot in the top 10. Finishing in 13th and 14th, respectively, was first-year Jessica Breth (20:45.3) and senior Marian Overfield (20:50).

On the men's side, first-year Will Callender ran a 16:01.1 to take home top honors. Five others raced in the top 10 as well.

First-year Ben Nichols (16:15.8) and senior Alex DeLong (16:27.9) took top five spots in third and fifth, respectively. 

Sophomore Duncan Hardy finished sixth (16:29.3), first-year Drew Robertson took seventh (16:31.2) and first-year Eric Johnson was ninth (16:38.9).

Sophomore Mitch Ecklund got into the top 15 with a 14th place at 16:57.4.

This was one final meet before the NCAA DIII Great Lakes Regional, which takes place at Franklin College on Nov. 13.
