Scots Compete at Regionals

Kayla Bertholf College of Wooster Cross Country SHELBYVILLE, Ky. – The College of Wooster women's cross country team posted its highest NCAA Div. III Great Lakes Regional Championships finish since 2006 on Saturday afternoon at Blue River Cross Country Course. The Fighting Scots were 13th of 37 scoring teams, while the men were 28th of 37 scoring teams.

Wooster's All-North Coast Athletic Conference trio all placed in the top 60. Senior Isabelle Hoover led that group with the 46th-place time of 23:15.6. Sophomore Athena Tharenos was next at 23:24.2, the 55th-fastest time of the day. Senior Kayla Bertholf came in three spots back of Tharenos at 23:26.6.

Next, first-year Dylan Kretchmar came across at 23:36.8, the 68th-place time, and senior Rachel Osterhouse capped the scorers in 171st-place (25:52.1). First-years Jessica Breth and Elise Greenwald earned the start at regionals in their rookie seasons. Breth covered the course in 25:55.4 (175th) and Greenwald in 26:55.2 (203rd).

Just as he has all season long, first-year Will Callender led the men's team. He crossed at 27:05.7, which was 111th in the 266-harrier field. Fellow rookie Ben Nichols logged a strong showing at his first regional meet with a time of 27:25.6. He finished in the top half of the field in 130th-place.

Wooster, which had a very youthful squad this fall, had that reflected in Saturday's lineup. Four of the seven competitors were first-years, including Drew Robertson and Eric Johnson, who were the Scots' No. 3 and No. 4 at the regional championships. Robertson finished 170th with a time of 27:59.5, and Johnson was three spots back of him with a time of 28:03.6.

Sophomore Duncan Hardy, also making his regional debut, crossed fifth within the team at 28:34.9 and finished just inside the top 200 at 195th. Senior Alex DeLong (204th, 28:47.9) and sophomore Mitch Ecklund (216th, 29:06.4) rounded out the Scots' entrants.

Wooster was 12th in the women's standings at the 2006 regional meet.
