Five Earn All-NCAC Honors at Championships

GRANVILLE – The College of Wooster men's and women's cross country teams competed in the North Coast Athletic Conference Championships on Saturday as the men placed fourth and the women took home fifth.

The Scots totaled five All-NCAC performances with three on the men's side and two on the women's side. 

Juniors Drew Robertson and Will Callender earned All-NCAC First Team honors, finishing second and third respectively, while Eric Johnson claimed the last All-NCAC spot to earned third team honors after a 21st place finish.

Junior Dylan Kretchmar finished in fifth place for the women to earn her All-NCAC First Team honors, while senior Athena Tharenos placed 12th to make the second team.

Focusing first on the men, Robertson was the runner up to Wittenberg University's Conor Kolka who finished in a time of 25:27.2. Robertson crossed the line in 25:52, while Callender came in at 25:58.9.

Robertson jumped the charts after falling just shy of earning All-NCAC honors a year ago. Meanwhile, Callender broke free from two straight years of earning second team honors. 

Johnson scored last year but was able to claim the last spot on Saturday, finishing with a time of 26:52.8.

Junior Ben Nichols finished in 28th with a time of 27:08.5, and sophomore Joe Ahmann came in 65th (28:45.8) to round of scoring for the men.

Wabash College won the event with 62 points. Oberlin College scored 81, Wittenberg scored 99 and Wooster scored 108, holding off Denison University at 111 points.

For the women, this was Kretchmar's second showing at the NCAC Championships, having just missed honors with a 25th place finish as a first-year. Now, the junior claims a top five spot after finishing with a time of 22:42.8.

This was Tharenos's second cross country season. She did not quite reach the heights as her prior first-team honor performance but still claimed second team honors in 12th and a time of 23:11.3. 

Junior Jessie Breth jumped her standings from Wooster's overall performers. After rounding out the team last year, she finished as Wooster's third best runner this year in 42nd with a time of 25:18.6.

First-year Zanna Anderson finished 44th (25:32.5) and classmate Reeve Helvoigt finished 48th (25:49.7) in their first NCAC Championships experience to round out the women's scoring.

Wittenberg won the event with a score of 36, claiming the top three spots of the event as well. DePauw University came in second with 39 points. Wooster tallied 129 points altogether.

Next for Wooster, they will host the Twilight 5K Challenge on Nov. 3.
