Wooster Hangs On for 6-4 Win in Opener, Then Rolls Past Kenyon 12-1 to Finish Off Regular Season Sweep

Nanak Saran
Nanak Saran dominated Kenyon's hitters again. With seven scoreless innings during Wednesday's second game, he has now shutout the Lords for 16 innings this year.

WOOSTER, Ohio – The College of Wooster held off a late rally by Kenyon College to take Wednesday afternoon's opener 6-4, then received seven shutout innings from Nanak Saran and an eight-run sixth to roll to a 12-1 victory in the nightcap of the North Coast Athletic Conference East Division foes' doubleheader at Art Murray Field.

With the wins, Wooster (22-8, 10-2 NCAC East) completes a four-game regular season sweep of Kenyon (20-13, 6-6 NCAC East), and the Fighting Scots strengthened their position atop the NCAC East as they are two games ahead of Allegheny College with four to play.

Wooster appeared well on its way to a relatively comfortable game-one victory, heading into the final inning ahead 6-2 and with Michael Houdek on the mound having retired seven-straight batters. In the seventh, though, the Lords challenged the Scots' ace, tallying two runs on a Matt Contreras single, followed by a four-pitch walk, which loaded the bases with one out.

The coaching staff, which had visited the mound earlier in the inning, stuck with Houdek and the decision paid off, as the very next pitch was grounded to third base where Chandler Dippman fielded it, stepped on the bag, and threw over to first in plenty of time for a game-ending double play.

Houdek improved to 5-2 while pitching his second consecutive complete game.

The Scots tallied the day's opening run when Kenny Reckart doubled off of the wall in right field during the second inning, but Kenyon went ahead 2-1 in the top of the fourth. The visitors lead did not last long, as Drew Tornow opened the bottom of the frame by driving a triple into left center and Reckart brought him home on a fielder's choice play. Two batters later, Jake Fling singled home Reckart.

Ahead 3-2, Wooster padded its lead during the fifth, keyed by home runs from Michael Wielansky and Tornow. Wielansky sent a solo blast over the left-center fence, while Tornow's was a towering two-run shot out to right, which turned out to be the difference in the game.

Saran, who shutout the Lords for nine innings 15 days ago, took the mound for the second game and was even more dominant this time around. He gave up just four hits and did not walk a batter, compared to seven hits and two walks allowed in the shutout, in the seven innings of work en route to improving to 3-2.

By the time Saran was relieved, the Scots had constructed a 12-0 advantage with almost all the damage coming in the fifth and sixth innings. The three-run fifth featured Joey Gilmore's fourth homer this season and a Wielansky triple.

Leading 4-0, Wooster put the game away during the sixth as it pounded out seven hits, highlighted by two Reckart doubles. He led off the inning with a two-bagger down the right-field line and later on went the opposite way (left) for a run-scoring double. Among the highlights in between were two-run singles by Wielansky and Jamie Lackner.

Overall, the Scots' hit leaders were Wielansky (4-for-8, 3 RBI) and Tornow (4-for-6, 3 RBI), while Lackner also had a productive day with three walks and four RBI.

Wooster will be right back in action on Thursday afternoon, hosting John Carroll University (16-17) in a non-league affair at 4 p.m.
