Hampshire Honor Society

A group of seven College of Wooster football players – Adam Coppock, Nick Flannery, Dan Gorzynski, Zack Moore, Ethan Nichol, Paul Kelbly, and David Smith – have been granted membership in the 2016 National Football Foundation Hampshire Honor Society, the NFF announced on Wednesday.

The Hampshire Honor Society is annually made up of seniors from all collegiate divisions who were a starter or significant contributor and achieved a minimum 3.2 cumulative grade-point average. Among North Coast Athletic Conference schools, Wooster had the second-most award winners.

Coppock, a mathematics major (education minor) with a 3.81 GPA, started at both wide receiver and defensive back during his career with the Fighting Scots. He made the most impact at receiver, catching 31 balls for 321 yards and a couple of scores as a senior to boost his final numbers to 62 receptions, 613 yards, and three touchdowns. The versatile Coppock also had two career interceptions, 31 tackles, and even threw a touchdown pass during a trick play his sophomore season.

Flannery, who adds to his résumé after previously being named a first-team Academic All-American® and NCAA postgraduate scholarship winner this year, was a two-time all-conference offensive lineman and four-year starter (38 consecutive games). This past fall, the psychology major with a 3.96 ERA anchored the line at the center position, helping Wooster's up-tempo offense lead the league with 81.0 snaps per game, and previously, was the starting left tackle as a sophomore and junior and right tackle as a freshman.

Gorzynski, who sports a 3.62 GPA while majoring in history (education minor) and playing two sports (lacrosse), developed into a top tight end and special teams contributor. He hauled in 28 passes for 455 yards and five touchdowns in 2015, upping his career stat line to 42 receptions and 573 yards. Also spending time at defensive back and linebacker as a sophomore and junior, Gorzynski finished with 36 tackles.

Kelbly, a business economics major with a 3.40 GPA, started 30 of 33 games before a knee injury cut his senior season short. The 6-4, 315-pound left guard was a dominant force, highlighted by his sophomore year when the Scots set a school record for total offense (443.6 ypg) while averaging 30.6 points. Also of note, Kelbly was voted a team captain as was Flannery.

Moore, who majors in communication sciences and disorders (communication studies minor) with a 3.80 GPA, contributed as both a placekicker and a defensive back. In addition to accounting for 27 points as a kicker, he totaled 20 tackles and two pass breakups for his career.

Nichol missed significant time due to injuries, then finished with a strong senior season, earning a starting spot all 10 games in the defensive backfield. An English major (education minor) with a 3.72 GPA, he was the team's fourth-leading tackler with 48 stops, including 4.5 for losses. He also broke up four passes and forced a fumble.

Smith, a history major with a 3.33 GPA, won the starting quarterback position at the outset of the 2015 season, but was only able to start six games due to a number of injuries. He completed 58.0 percent of his passes for 761 yards and six touchdowns en route to a solid 106.2 efficiency rating. Smith started wins at Allegheny College and Kenyon College.
