Wooster Moves to 4-1 with Sweep Over Purple Raiders

WOOSTER, Ohio – The College of Wooster men's tennis team continued their 2018 roll with a 9-0 victory over the University of Mount Union on Thursday night at the Scot Center to make it four straight wins for the Fighting Scots.

Doubles went down in a 1-3-2, with sophomore Nathan Devereux and first-year Joaquin Abos Amo moving to 3-1 on the year together with a straightforward 8-4 win at the No. 1 spot.

In the third flight, senior Andrew Long and first-year Jorrit de Rouw defeated Kyle Hicken and Jacob Labonte 8-6, while senior Titas Bera and junior Jesse DeWitt won 9-8 (2).

In singles, Bera moved to a perfect 4-0 in singles match play with a 6-4, 7-6 (0) win at No 1. However, it was Devereux who clinched the match at No. 3 with a 6-2, 6-3 win, moments after Abos Amo turned in an identical 6-2, 6-3, score at the fourth slot.

de Rouw won 6-4, 7-6 (3), at No. 5 while DeWitt split his first two sets, 6-3, 5-7, before winning 11-9 in a shortened third-set super tiebreaker. Similar, first-year Saeed Husain won his opening set 6-1 before dropping the second, 6-0. In the third-set super tiebreaker, the Karachi, Pakistan native won 11-9 to remain a perfect 3-0 in singles play in 2018.

Up next, Wooster (4-1) travels north to take on John Carroll University (0-2) on Saturday, Feb. 24 at 2 p.m. at Cleveland State University.
