Wooster Opens Season With Strong Showing at Keyon Relays

The College of Wooster swimming and diving teams had strong showings at the season-opening Kenyon College Relays on Saturday afternoon in Gambier, Ohio. The women finished third for the second straight year while the men placed fourth.

The women would tally 66 points, to finish comfortably ahead of fourth-place Oberlin College (50 points). National powerhouses Denison University (120 points) and host Kenyon (114 points) would lead the way.

On the men's side, the Scots would rack up 50 points to finish behind Kenyon (124 points), Denison (116 points), and Ohio Northern University (62 points).

Wooster posted a trio of third-place finishes to highlight the action. Abby Blinka, Erin Drake, Rachel Mandel, and Alexandra Desotelle teams to touch at 2:10.22 in the 200-yard breaststroke. The Fighting Scots would take third in both diving events with Morgan Day and Theresa Spadola scoring a combined 353.45 points in the one-meter and 335.15 on the three-meter board.

Wooster placed fourth in the mixed 200 medley with Conner Gelwicks, Frayne Poeting, Kalla Sturonas, and Emma Fikse teaming to turn in a 1:44.75.

Highlighting the men's day was a fifth-place showing in the 200 breaststroke with the elder Poeting teaming with his brother Burke, Griffin Campbell and Andrew Pfeuffer to touch at 1:55.08. The men would also finish sixth in the 200 backstroke, consisting of Gelwicks, Poeting, Ryan Campbell , and Zackary Pool.

On the women's side, Fikse, Jamie Hibbs, Maggie Layde, and Desotelle teamed to turn in a fifth-place time of 1:41.81 in the 200 freestyle. Other top-six swims were turned in by the women's 200 butterfly, and 400 individual medley.

Wooster travels to Wittenberg University for a traditional dual meet next Saturday, Oct. 24, at 1 p.m.
