Wooster Sweeps Allegheny to Finish Season Undefeated in NCAC Dual Meets

The College of Wooster swimming and diving teams capped a perfect dual season against North Coast Athletic Conference opposition, sweeping aside Allegheny College by a 163-119 count on the men's side and a 155-132 score on the women's side Saturday afternoon inside the Timken Natatorium at Wooster, Ohio.

The sweep marked Wooster's fifth of the year against NCAC competition, having previously topped Hiram College, Oberlin College, Ohio Wesleyan University, and rival Wittenberg University.

The Fighting Scots had a strong start to their "Senior Meet," with Emma Fikse, Alexandra Desotelle, Kalla Sturonas, and Jamie Hibbs teaming up to touch at 1:54.40 in the 200 medley relay to take top honors. Moments, later the men had a likewise first-place performance with Conner Gelwicks, Frayne Poeting, Zackary Pool, and Aaron Brown clocking in at 1:39.80.

Fikse and Gelwicks both went on to earn double-winner status for the meet in the individual events. Fikse won the 100 and 200 freestyles with times of 55.83 and 2:01.04, while Gelwicks touched first in the 100 backstroke (54.80) and the 100 butterfly (54.00).

Sophomore Maggie Layde was also a double winner in the meet, taking first in the 200 fly (2:16.18) and the 500 free (5:29.04).

Wooster's breastrokers had another big meet. On the women's side, Desotelle out-reached Erin Drake 1:10.14 to 1:10.51 to win the 100 and Rachel Mandel placed third at 1:14.79. The 1-2-3 women's finish marked the sixth of the season in dual-meet breaststroke events.

On the men's side, Poeting touched first at 1:02.36, ahead of senior classmate Andrew Pfeuffer (1:03.75).

The women also posted a 1-2-3 finish in the 100 free, with Desotelle (57.25) and Annabelle Hopkins (58.07) backing up Fikse's winning time.

Other highlights from the women's meet included Drake's winning time of 2:34.23 in the 200 breast, and Sarah Litt, who turned in the fastest time in the 400 individual medley (4:54.66).

In the men's meet, Pool cruised to a four-second victory in the 200 back, touching at 2:05.32. He went on to backup Gelwicks' winning time in the 100 back, posting a time of 56.01.

First-years Michael Crookshanks and Max Koch added first-place finishes in the 200 (1:49.66) and 500 (5:01.41) frees, respectively.

Next Saturday, Wooster travels to Michigan for its final tune-up prior to the NCAC Championships. Wooster will swim a double-dual meet against Albion College and Olivet College.
