Scots Reel In Both NCAC Weekly Swimming & Diving Awards

Emma Fikse
Cameron Gelwicks

Juniors Emma Fikse and Cameron Gelwicks of The College of Wooster swimming & diving team combined for 11 event wins last week, and for their efforts, the freestyle specialists were tabbed as the North Coast Athletic Conference Athletes-of-the-Week, as announced by the league office on Monday afternoon.

Fikse logged five first-place finishes last week, including the 500 and 1000 freestyles in a tight 117-114 loss at John Carroll University on Friday. Against the Blue Streaks, Fikse's 10:55.90 in the 1000 free was nearly 30 seconds faster than the runner-up time, and her 5:19.58 in the 500 was part of a top-three showing by the Fighting Scots in the event. With the outcome of the meet still in the balance, Fikse was part of the Scots' first-place 200 free relay that came in at 1:41.75, and edged out the Blue Streaks' top quartet by :00.14.

On Saturday, Fikse doubled up once again on first-place finishes with the winning times of 54.62 and 1:58.39 in the 100 and 200 frees respectively.

Notable this is the second time Fikse's earned NCAC Athlete-of-the-Week honors in her career.

Gelwicks turned in a winning effort in all six of his events last week. On Friday, the junior opened with a 1:44.51 in the 200 free, and later added a 4:50.88 in the 500 free. Gelwicks capped the meet with a leadoff split of 22.44 as part of the Scots' winning 200 free relay that clocked in at 1:28.58.

In Saturday's double-dual meet sweep, Gelwicks held off Ohio Wesleyan University's Cooper Comstock down the stretch in the 400 medley relay as the Scots edged out the Battling Bishops 3:38.65 to 3:38.97. Individually, he went on to earn the blue ribbon in the 100 free (48.09) and the 200 free (1:45.15).

Gelwicks is the first Scot on the men's side to earn the NCAC's weekly honor since older brother, Conner, did so on Oct. 24, 2015.

Fikse, Gelwicks, and their Scot teammates close out the dual meet portion of the schedule with a 1 p.m. clash against the University of Mount Union at Timken Natatorium on Saturday.
