Wooster Wins Two Events, Records 12 Top-Three Finishes at Kenyon Spring Invite

The College of Wooster track & field teams won two events and recorded 12 top-three finishes at the Kenyon College Spring Invite on Saturday at Gambier, Ohio. Wooster's women's team placed fourth while the men took fifth.

Mount Vernon Nazarene University led the seven-team field on the men's side with 153 points, while Notre Dame College's 122 points were two better than Allegheny College and Oberlin College who each had 120. On the women's side Oberlin led the way with 187 points with host Kenyon (146), Allegheny (136) and Wooster (78) rounding out the top four.

Both of the Fighting Scots' first-place finishes came on the men's side. In the 1500 meters, Jacob Denbeaux's 4:00.07 led a field of 22 competitors, and was .67 seconds faster than the runner-up time turned in by Allegheny. In the shot put Matt Margida's season-best heave of 48 feet came in 11 inches better than the next-highest finisher.

Wooster's throwers had a big meet with Margida adding runner-up honors in the discus with a throw of 137 feet, 7 inches, and Tyler Catlin's 157-foot throw in the hammer throw ranking third.

On the track, Jarrett Art sprinted to a sixth-place finish of 26 competitors in the 200 meters, crossing at a career-best 23.23, while Myles Parker placed eighth of 21 in the 400 meters with a career-best time of 53.28. The Scots also scored two runners in the distance events with Roy Hadfield and Geoff Carney-Knisely finishing fifth (10:46.56) and sixth (10:54.89) in the 3000-meter steeplechase. In the 5000 meters, Jackson Feinknopf placed fifth crossing at 16:26.92, and time that was backed up by Albert Darling's eighth-place clip of 16:45.26.

Other notable performances were turned in by Jacob Nowell who was fifth in the pole vault, Brian Lief who was seventh in the 1500 meters, and Conor Maley who was a double-scorer in the long and triple jumps.

In the women's meet, the Scots recorded a pair of top-three marks in the jumps. In the long jump, Katie Cameron's 16 feet, 8.5 inches earned the junior runner-up honors. Then, in the triple jump Brigid O'Hara recorded a mark of 33 feet, 4 inches for a third-place showing.

In the throws, Alyssa Kendrick heaved the javelin 90 feet, 10 inches for runner-up laurels.

Wooster's thinclads recorded a trio of third-place times on the track. In the 100-meter dash, Erika Womack sprinted to the finish at a career-best clip of 13.17. Julia Higgins clocked in at 1:03.42 in the 400 meters, while Emani Kelley went 2:23.91 in the 800 meters.

Other noteworthy performances were turned in by Lissette Torres who was fourth in the 400 meters, and Mallory Crane who was sixth in the long jump.

Wooster also sent a small contingent to the Jesse Owens Track & Field Classic held at The Ohio State University on Saturday.

Hilary Coady led the way at Ohio State with a season-best time of 1:01.79 in the 400-meter hurdles and placed eighth, beating out Div. I competitors from the University of Michigan, the University of Central Florida, and West Virginia University among others.

Next, Wooster has its final tune-up prior to the North Coast Athletic Conference Championships with the Denison University Invitational on Friday, April 29.
