Carly Carey and Roy Messer, College of Wooster alums who have made outstanding contributions to the coaching profession at various levels, will each be honored with the Paul V. Barrett Award on Saturday, Feb. 9, as announced by the W Association. The presentation will take place during halftime of the men's basketball game between Wooster and Wittenberg University.
Carey, who graduated from the College in 2009, went on to start a pair of varsity lacrosse programs, first at Miami Valley School in Dayton, Ohio, and most recently at Parish Episcopal School in Dallas, Texas. Carey's coached lacrosse each year since 2009 and has also spent time coaching soccer (2009-18), basketball (2009-15), and field hockey (2015-present). Carey's work building the lacrosse program at Miami Valley School played a key role in her earning an OHSAA Sportsmanship, Ethics, and Integrity Award in 2015. Outside of coaching, Carey's taught at the middle school at Miami Valley (2009-15) and Parish (2015-present).
Messer, a 1970 graduate of the College, retired in 2015 after coaching Earlham College's men's soccer program for 34 years. During his career, Messer guided Earlham to 278 wins with the Quakers winning at least 10 matches 11 times. Along the way, Earlham made six appearances in the NAIA Tournament, and earned a berth in the 1998 NCAA Tournament. The following season, Messer's program went on to win a program-record 16 contests. With Messer at the helm, the Quakers won five conference championships, most recently the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference regular season title in 2013. He was the North Coast Athletic Conference's Coach of the Year in 1997, and earned the same honor from the HCAC in 2013.
Of note, current Wooster assistant women's soccer coach Wes Davis was on Messer's staff for three years at Earlham (2002-04) and current women's lacrosse student-athlete Jenny Grossmann played for Carey at Miami Valley.
The Barrett Award seeks to recognize Wooster graduates who have made significant contributions as a coach of any sport at any level (professional, college, high school, youth, etc.), factoring in both on-field success and off-the-field impact.
