College Sports Communicators Academic All-District® Release
The College of Wooster's Vinny DiLeo, Shane Epstein-Petrullo, Gabe Guthrie, Tyler Hilbert, Casey Steffen, and Jacob Ullom were the Fighting Scots' selections to the College Sports Communicators' Academic All-District® Team for men's at-large sports, which was announced by the national organization on Tuesday afternoon.
DiLeo, a senior attacker from the men's lacrosse team, earns CSC Academic All-District® honors for the second time. He graduated as a two-time All-NCAC performer and played in the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association Senior All-Star game. DiLeo authored one of the top offensive careers in program history, becoming the second Fighting Scot to log over 100 goals and 100 assists. He graduated third all-time in program history with 226 points and his 103 career assists are also the third-most in the program annals. This spring, DiLeo scored 35 goals and passed out 22 assists for his third straight 50-point season. DiLeo added 33 groundballs and 13 caused turnovers.
The biology alumnus worked with poison dart frogs for his Independent Study and found a mutualism exists between a specific Costa Rican bromeliad and poison dart frogs. DiLeo's research at Wooster was published in a pair of scientific publications and he was a member of an undergraduate research team led by Rebecca Williams, assistant professor of biology. He was inducted to Phi Beta Kappa as a senior and was part of the campus chapter of Beta Beta Beta, the biology honor society for undergraduate students. While applying to physical therapy schools, DiLeo will be gaining field experience in a hospital working with inpatient physical therapy. The two-time Academic All-District® honoree previously gained field experience as a shadow at Wooster Orthopaedic and Sports Medicine Center.
Epstein-Petrullo, a returning CSC Academic All-American®, was a men's lacrosse midfielder for four years. Epstein-Petrullo enjoyed his best season as a senior, playing in 18 games and scoring a career-high 11 points on six assists and five goals. Epstein-Petrullo added 17 groundballs and four caused turnover to his senior stat line. Epstein-Petrullo passed out three assists in Wooster's regular season finale at Wabash College.
The statistical and data sciences alumnus explored NFL rookie running back success based on college stats, contracts, and draft round. As an undergraduate, Epstein-Petrullo was an intern with CoreWeave in Brooklyn, New York. There, he worked with the machine learning and capacity planning department and led a project to forecast the power usage of products. He troubleshooted and found the cause of client latency issues through statistical modeling, which resulted in client success and overall product usage as shown by decreased run times and latency. He created and modified documents to help clients use products, which improved customer success. On campus, Epstein-Petrullo was a calculus tutor in the College's STEM Zone, was a research assistant, worked with the men's lacrosse team as its shooting data analyst, was a teaching assistant, and was the president of the campus Data Club. Next year, Epstein-Petrullo will be attending Massachusetts Institute of Technology to work towards obtaining a master's degree in business analytics. Additionally, the two-time CSC Academic All-District® honoree will continue his work at CoreWeave.
Guthrie, a sophomore on the men's golf team, turned in one of the top seasons in recent program history. His 76.15 average was the sixth-best in program history since the switch to stroke-play tournaments in 1972. Guthrie's sophomore year opened with back-to-back medalist honors, which led the program to consecutive first-place finishes. Guthrie opened the year with a 1-under-par 143 at the program's annual Gatorade Collegiate to become the third player in program history to finish a 36-hole tournament under par since at least 1990. He followed that up with a 4-over-par 146 at the Westfield Collegiate Golf Classic. By leading the program to consecutive first-place finishes as a team, Wooster won multiple tournaments in back-to-back seasons for the first time since 1976, when the program was the defending NCAA Div. III national champion. Guthrie had two other top-10 finishes on the year, with those coming at the program's annual Nye Intercollegiate and the Denison University Spring Invitational.
Hilbert, a senior on the men's golf team, surged up the leaderboard over the final two rounds of the NCAC Championships to earn second-team all-conference laurels. Wooster's No. 1 posted back-to-back career-best 1-under-par 69s to cap his career as a Scot. The alumnus' 75.79 average is the fourth-best in program history since the implementation of the stroke-play era in 1972. Hilbert logged a trio of top-five showings on the season. His first came at the season-opening Gatorade Collegiate, where he shot even par for the 36-hole event. Next, Hilbert's 155 was the fourth-place score at the program's Nye Intercollegiate in April, as was his 151 at John Carroll University's Dan Caschera Invitational. Hilbert's 78.36 career average ranks in the top-10 in program history.
The business economics alumnus was one of two seniors selected to serve as commencement speakers this spring. For his Independent Study, the two-time CSC Academic All-District® honoree looked at how investing into sports and non-sports cards compares with that of equity and bond indexes. Hilbert's internships are headlined by serving as an accounting and research assistant at Noesner Property Group in Dublin, Ohio. There, Hilbert gained field experience in the areas of expenses and the impact on taxes and acquired pricing expertise for rental properties by establishing a local market analysis. Hilbert was previously a project consultant with the startup Common Owner in New York. There, he collaborated with the organization to fulfill their research objectives and address specific needs. On campus, Hilbert was a trustee for the Jenny Investment Club, a student organization which manages a small portfolio of the College's endowment. He served as a team representative with the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee. Hilbert plans to continue to play in amateur tournaments in the region and pursue longterm work opportunities around Columbus, Ohio.
Steffen, who became the program's second two-time USILA All-American this spring, is one of the top defenders in NCAA Div. III history, evidenced by having 195 career caused turnovers, the fourth-most in Div. III history. Steffen ranked third nationally this spring with 3.61 caused turnovers per game. Steffen caused 65 turnovers this spring, the second-most in single-season history, and he backed that up with 74 groundballs and three assists. Steffen earned a third first-team All-NCAC certificate this spring and was named to the NCAC All-Decade Team for 2014-23 as a NCAC Defensive Player of the Year within that time span. As a junior, Steffen set a new Div. III record with 5.06 caused turnovers per game and broke the NCAC and Wooster single-season records with 86 caused turnovers.
For his Independent Study, Steffen wrote an analysis of Spartan and Elean relations. The classical studies major reviewed the history and analysis of where Elis went wrong. On campus, Steffen was a peer tutor for Greek courses and was a teaching assistant for Attic Greek. As a research assistant, Steffen gained practical experience with Thucydides in the original Greek. In the summers, Steffen worked as a ranch hand back home in California. He will attend the University of Virginia to pursue a Ph.D. in classic.
Ullom repeated as an All-NCAC performer this spring with an 11th-place finish at the NCAC Championships. Ullom fired an even-par 70 in the second round of the conference championships, where he helped Wooster shoot its lowest team round since 1985 at 286. He followed that up with a 1-over-par 71 in his final round as a Scot, which helped Wooster go even lower at 283. Ullom logged a 77.1 average over 19 rounds as a senior and had seven rounds of 75 or better. He was the runner-up at the Westfield Collegiate Golf Classic, shooting 152 for the two-day tournament.
Ullom's I.S. focused on variables that affect the foreign policy decision-making process. The political science alumnus was a communications intern in Governor Mike DeWine's office last summer and worked on press releases and social media posts. Additionally, Ullom worked on ad campaign schedules and social media strategy. He was previously a government affairs intern at Indiana Housing and Community Development Authority in Indianapolis in 2022. As an undergraduate, Ullom was a volunteer at Edgewood Middle School. Ullom's post-Wooster career starts as a project coordinator in the economic development department at HWC Engineering in Indiana.
