Shelley Judge

Shelley Judge, department chair and associate professor of earth sciences and liaison to the data exploration and communication pathway, is one of Wooster’s Faculty Athletics Representatives (FAR). Judge was the NCAA Div. III FAR of the Year in 2021.

As FARs, Judge and Drew Pasteur, professor of mathematics and department co-chair of mathematical and computational sciences, regularly advise student-athletes on a range of topics in one-on-one settings. They work with student-athletes, coaches, faculty, and the dean for academic engagement when there are scheduling conflicts between academics and athletics. Judge and Pasteur educate faculty members on NCAA and NCAC issues and Wooster’s athletics mission and philosophy. The duo actively participate in recruiting efforts by meeting with prospective student-athletes and families to answer academic questions about Wooster and they are part of admissions panels for admitted students. Judge and Pasteur spearhead the nomination process for NCAA Postgraduate Scholarships, and Wooster has had 14 selections since the start of the 2017-18 academic year. Wooster’s ranked within the top-five for most NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship recipients three times since the 2017-18 academic year and had the number one ranking for 2021-22 with four NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship recipients.

Judge was serving a three-year term as a FAR chair on the North Coast Athletic Conference Sports Caucus during COVID and played a leading role in helping Wooster and the NCAC navigate through COVID-19 planning and protocols. As FAR chair of the Sports Caucus, Judge had a leadership role within the assembly of athletic administrators and FARs from each NCAC member institution that acts on legislative proposals, initiates proposals on its own, and recommends legislation to the NCAC Presidents’ Council. As chair, Judge led the conference-wide Sports Caucus meetings and attended the NCAC Presidents’ Council meetings to serve as a liaison on key discussion points pertaining to items sent forth from the caucus.

Judge joined Wooster’s faculty in 2008. Her research interests include the tectonic evolution of the Sevier and Laramide orogenies of the western United States and superimposed pre-Basin and Range extension, with special emphasis on these geological events in Utah. She has participated in several ocean drilling programs and is a member of the American Association of Petroleum Geologists, the Geological Society of America, and the National Association of Geoscience Teachers.

Judge earned a bachelor's degree from Mount Union College, master's degrees from Kent State University and The Ohio State University, and a Ph.D. from Ohio State.
