COLUMBUS, Ohio - The College of Wooster baseball program has a number of great wins in its storied 111-year history, but none may have been more significant than the Scots' 9-7 upset victory over NCAA Division I power Ohio State University on Wednesday night in front of 1,258 at Bill Davis Stadium.

Wooster (28-2) demonstrated why it's the No. 1 ranked team in Division III, showing throughout that it could play with Ohio State (23-11-1) - the defending champ and current leader of the Big Ten Conference.

With the game tied at 7-7 in the top of the eighth inning, the Scots loaded the bases with one out. Matt Miller (Millersburg, Ohio / Hiland) grounded to third base, forcing Dave Wernecke (State College, Pa. / State College Area), who led all players with four singles, out at the plate. But Wooster's hottest hitter of late, Bill Daugherty (West Leechburg, Pa. / Leechburg Area), singled to left center field on an 0-1 pitch to plate two runs and accounted for the eventual final two-run advantage.

Matt Englander (Solon, Ohio / Solon), who gave up two solo home runs in the bottom of the seventh which allowed the Buckeyes to tie the game, sandwiched a single around two outs in the eighth before giving way to John Werner (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Northgate), who struck out No. 3 hitter Doug Deeds to end the inning.

The Scots did not score in their half of the ninth, sending Werner out in the last inning to earn his second career save. He retired the first two batters, but the game stayed alive due to a Wooster error. Werner hit the next batter, putting runners on first and second with two outs, but struck out Brooks Graff to end the game.

Despite an uncharacteristic performance, Englander picked up his seventh win of the season, while Chris Hanners fell to 1-2 after allowing Wooster's two eighth-inning runs.

Along with Wernecke, who scored three times as well, offensive keys for the Scots came from Daugherty, who was 2-for-5 with his fourth home run in as many games and three runs batted in, and Jake Frank (Wooster, Ohio / Northwestern), who connected on his fifth homer of the season.

Christian Snavely led the Buckeye offense by going 3-for-5 with a home run and three RBIs.

Wooster will not have long to savor its win, as it returns to central Ohio on Thursday (April 25) for a doubleheader at Denison University (18-13), starting at 3:30 p.m.
