CLEVELAND, Ohio – For the second year in a row, The College of Wooster sprayed hits all over the Cleveland Indians' Progressive Field early on, highlighted by a third-inning Matt Groezinger home run, and the Fighting Scots rolled to an eventual 13-5 win over northeast Ohio foe Case Western Reserve University Wednesday afternoon.

The two teams have played a game at Progressive Field three seasons in a row now, with Wooster emerging as the victor in each match-up, including 15-5 last April 16 when it put up 13 runs on the board over the first five innings and pounded out 19 hits in all.

On Wednesday, the Scots (26-7) jumped out to an 11-0 cushion through three and one-half innings and went on to collect 17 hits in all. They scored just two batters into the game, as Matthew Johnson led off with a double to the opposite field (right) and came home on Luke Sutton's sharply-hit single up the middle. Sutton would also score during the top of the first for a 2-0 lead.

In the second, Wooster added a single tally with a two-out rally. Chris Wood singled deep into the hole at short, swiped second, and reached third on an errant throw during the stolen base attempt, and then Shane Swearingen delivered an RBI single through the right side.

A five-run third inning followed. Sutton opened it with a walk, and an out later, Groezinger deposited one into the seats in right-center for his seventh homer this season and the 29th, and maybe most memorable, of his career. The other big hit that frame came from Swearingen as he had a bases-loaded, two-out bloop single to right-center that cleared the bases and gave the Scots an 8-0 advantage.

Three more came across in the top of the fourth, which started again with a Sutton walk. With one out, Groezinger beat out an infield single and Greg Van Horn sliced a ground-rule double into the corner in right field for one run. Zack Vesco followed with a line-drive single to center that plated both Groezinger and Van Horn, making it an 11-0 score.

The rest of the game became a formality, with Wooster cruising home to the eight-run victory.

Using a prearranged rotation, Justin McDowell was awarded the win (6-2) as he was the most effective of the Scots' seven pitchers. He started and went three scoreless innings, giving up just one single and striking out one without a walk.

Offensively, Groezinger reached base four times, going 2-for-3 with a walk and hit by pitch, while Vesco paced Wooster with three hits (3-for-4) and Swearingen with four RBI (2-for-5).

Wooster will be right back in action Thursday afternoon, hosting Denison University at 4 p.m.
