WOOSTER, Ohio – Five pitchers for The College of Wooster, ranked No. 6 by D3baseball.com, combined to hold No. 4 Heidelberg University to just seven hits, lifting the Fighting Scots to a 5-1 victory in a match-up Wednesday afternoon between two of the traditional powers within the NCAA Div. III Mideast Region at sunny Art Murray Field.

After giving up a first-inning run, Wooster (21-6) evened the score in the bottom half of the frame on a Matthew Johnson homer to straightaway center. He has now homered five times in six home games this year, and his seven total are a team high.

It remained 1-1 until the bottom of the fifth when Luke Sutton drove one over the fence in right and inside the line to give the Scots the lead. The solo shot marked Sutton's first round-tripper of the season.

Wooster gained some separation during the seventh, as Michael Wellstead and Shane Swearingen sent back-to-back, one-out singles up the middle, which knocked out Heidelberg's (23-5) starting pitcher. Chris Wood greeted the reliever by dropping a single into right-center, plating Wellstead and putting Swearingen on third. Wood then successfully stole second and a wild throw allowed Swearingen to trot home for a 4-1 cushion. Later in the frame, the Scots added one more via a Johnson line-drive single to left that scored Sutton.

The story of the game, though, was Wooster's pitching as it held a 'Berg team, averaging 9.2 runs and batting .336 as a team, in check. The Scots utilized Matt Barnes, Justin McDowell, and Tanner Hall for two innings apiece, then went to Nate Gemberling-Johnson for 1.0, and Tyler Fugate for the final 2.0. Heidelberg managed just seven singles and two walks, while striking out five times. Hall earned the win, his second (2-0) in just four appearances this spring.

Johnson and Shane Swearingen each went 2-for-4 to pace Wooster in the hits category.

The Scots return to action Thursday, as they'll travel to Muskingum University (11-11), with first pitch slated for 4 p.m.
