Van Horn, Johnson Consensus All-American Picks

2010 ABCA All-America Team
2010 D3baseball.com All-America Team

Greg Van Horn and Matthew Johnson of The College of Wooster have both been selected to the American Baseball Coaches Association and D3baseball.com All-America Teams, as announced this week by each organization. Van Horn, a junior shortstop, received third-team recognition on both squads, while Johnson, a senior second baseman, also landed third-team status from the ABCA and honorable mention from D3baseball.com.

<a href= Van Horn, who transferred from Princeton University, closed his first year with the Fighting Scots with a .486 batting average, highlighted by 35 extra-base hits – 19 doubles, eight triples, and eight home runs. Van Horn currently holds the seventh-highest average in the NCAA Div. III statistics, while ranking eighth in slugging percentage (.890), tied for fifth in triples, 11th in on-base percentage (.564), and tied for 22nd in doubles, and he's also among the top-100 in runs scored (73), hits (71), and RBI (56).

A consistent force, Van Horn, who also contributed a team-leading 16 stolen bases, reached base safely in 39 of 42 games. He began his Wooster career with a 10-game hitting streak, highlighted by a 4-for-4, two-walk outing versus then-No. 10 ranked Kean University March 15. Van Horn also closed the year strong, finishing on a 15-game tear that saw him bat .577 overall (30-for-52) with 10-multi-hit outings, seven doubles, four triples, five homers, and 24 RBI. During that stretch, he was named the MVP of the conference tourney and then reached base in seven of nine plate appearances (4-for-6 with two walks and a hit by pitch) at the NCAA Div. III Championships.

<a href= Johnson, who missed 17 games due to injury last spring, bounced back to become one of the most effective leadoff hitters in Div. III, as he is tied for eighth nationally with 69 runs scored and tied for 14th with 79 hits. Overall, Johnson batted .459, which ranks 26th in the latest statistics, and he matched Van Horn's triple total of eight while also leading the team and tying for 50th in the country in homers with 11. Johnson added 14 steals while accumulating a .826 slugging percentage and .532 on-base percentage.

Also similar to Van Horn, Johnson closed the season strong. Over the final 13 games from April 18-May 20, he hit .564 (31-for-55) with 11 multi-hit outings, six doubles, five triples, four homers, and 13 RBI. Johnson, the 2010 North Coast Athletic Conference Player of the Year, reached base in 41 of 43 games and repeatedly came through in the clutch, witness his team-best 28 two-out RBI.

The duo led the Scots to a record of 34-9, the NCAC championship, and a regional appearance in the NCAA's.
