Johnson Fuels Wooster's Win Streak, Garners NCAC Honors

The No. 3 ranked College of Wooster baseball team pushed its win streak to nine games with six-consecutive wins last week, and senior Matthew Johnson led the Scots' charge, as the second baseman batted .652 with eight extra-base hits to garner North Coast Athletic Conference Player of the Week honors.

Johnson got his week started at the Cleveland Indians' ballpark, Progressive Field, where he went 2-for-6 with a double and a run scored in Wooster's 13-5 triumph over Case Western Reserve University. Then during the next day in a 10-2 win over Denison University, Johnson finished 2-for-5, both hits doubles, and added a pair of runs scored.

Over the weekend the Fighting Scots swept Hiram College in a four-game series, and Johnson went a remarkable 11-for-12 at the plate, with two home runs and two triples. The senior had his best showing during the nightcap on Saturday, when he was 3-for-3 with three runs scored and three RBI, needing just a double to complete the cycle (single, triple, home run).

During the six-game stretch, Johnson went 15-for-23 (.652), with 13 runs and five RBI, and was also perfect in 31 chances in the field. He has recorded 10-consecutive hits and has not been retired over his last 13 plate appearances.

The Scots (31-7, 13-3 NCAC East) will head to Chillicothe, Ohio later this week to compete in the NCAC Tournament, with an opening tilt against Wabash College (18-21, 9-7 NCAC West) set for Thursday evening at 8 p.m.
