The College of Wooster rallied for four runs during the fifth inning to pull within 8-5 of No. 8 ranked Marietta College, but an early 6-0 deficit was ultimately too much to overcome as the Fighting Scots fell 9-5 on Thursday night at Don Schaly Stadium in Marietta, Ohio.

After spotting Marietta (22-8) a six-run lead through two innings, which included Jordan Grilliot and Aaron Hopper homering in two of the Pioneers' first three at bats, Wooster got on the scoreboard in the top of the third. Bryan Miller, as he often does, started the rally with a one-out single back up the middle, followed by back-to-back walks for Jarrod Mancine and John McLain, and then Eddie Reese delivered an RBI single into left field.

Marietta pushed its advantage out to 8-1 entering the fifth when the Scots got back into the game. First, Mancine and McLain had consecutive singles and Reese drove in the former via a sacrifice fly. With two outs, Wooster strung together a Zac Mathie RBI double, a Brendan Taylor walk, and RBI singles from Craig Day and Johnathan Ray, all of which resulted in a three-run game (8-5).

That would be all of the scoring for the Scots, though, as they were limited to just one hit the rest of the way.

Wooster used six pitchers on the night, Brett DeWester and Jon Rothman being the most effective as they worked 1-2-3 sixth and eighth innings, respectively.

Reese paced the Scots at the plate with a 2-for-4, two-RBI effort.

The Scots will return to North Coast Athletic Conference East Division action this weekend when they travel to Allegheny College (19-11, 8-4 NCAC East) for a four-game series
