WOOSTER, Ohio – The College of Wooster blasted six home runs, including three by Jamie Lackner and a grand slam from Ian Vernier, in its home opener as the Fighting Scots routed Muskingum University 16-4 Wednesday afternoon at Art Murray Field.

After spotting Muskingum (6-10) a two-run lead through one half inning, Wooster (11-1) quickly tied it on back-to-back solo shots courtesy of Frank Vance and Lackner in the bottom of the first. John McLain followed with a double and Joey Gilmore poked one down the right field line that stayed fair for a two-run round tripper and 4-2 lead.

In the second inning, Lackner delivered a three-run homer out of the reach of the right fielder, who flipped over the fence, as the Scots extended their early advantage to 7-2.

Wooster completely broke the game open during the third, plating six more runs. Gilmore beat out an infield single, Jacob Solomon walked, and the bases were full after Kenny Reckart's bunt turned into a hit, which brought up the No. 9 spot in the order. Vernier drove the first pitch he saw to deep left-center for the grand slam, marking the senior's first career home run.

The Scots tacked on two more tallies that frame, including a Vance RBI single, for an 11-2 cushion, and the rest of the game became a formality.

Lackner's third dinger led off the sixth inning and went out just about in straightaway center, as all three of his homers were to different areas. In the first, he sent a screaming liner over the left-field fence. Lackner is the first Wooster player to homer three times in the same game since Matt Groezinger achieved the feat versus Denison University during the North Coast Athletic Conference Tournament on May 1, 2010.

On the mound, the Scots used eight different hurlers, with Zach Woullard taking the win (1-0) as the pitcher of record after the first two innings.

In addition to Lackner's 3-for-5, five-RBI performance, Vernier stood out not only for his grand slam, but because he reached base safely all four times by going 2-for-2 with two walks. Also with two hits were Vance (2-for-5) and Gilmore (2-for-4).

The Muskies' Vayden Wood had a three-hit performance (3-for-5).

Wooster will begin NCAC divisional play this weekend, traveling to western Pennsylvania for a four-game set with Allegheny College (6-5, 0-0 NCAC East).
