Case Western Reserve Spoils Wooster’s “Senior Day” With 5-4, 13-7 Sweep

Michael Wielansky squared up on this pitch, driving a triple off the wall in centerfield, during Saturday's opener.

WOOSTER, Ohio – The fifth inning proved to be pivotal in both games at Art Murray Field on Saturday, with Case Western Reserve University scoring four runs that frame during its opening 5-4 win and exploding for an eight-spot midway through a 13-7 decision in the nightcap, as the Spartans spoiled The College of Wooster's "Senior Day."

During game one, Wooster (14-7) owned a couple of early leads – 1-0 on Jamie Lackner's first-inning double to the opposite field (right-center) and 2-1 in the fourth when Ryan Ostendorf hit a sacrifice fly to plate Michael Wielansky, who had tripled off the wall in center.

Case Western Reserve (20-12) loaded the bases, which included a pair of hit by pitches, in the fifth with one out, and the visitors took the lead via a wild pitch and sacrifice fly. The Fighting Scots were unable to escape the inning without further damage, though, as Mike Najmowicz cleared the fence in left for a two-run homer and 5-2 advantage on the scoreboard.

Wooster battled back, making it a one-run game during the bottom of the seventh. Drew Tornow led off with a double and later raced safely home during a fielder's choice play, and pinch hitter Jacob Solomon followed with an RBI double.

The Scots tried to rally in the eighth and ninth. Lackner was stranded on first after a single in the former, then the Spartans went to the bullpen twice to close it out as Corey Brown forced a game-ending pop-up with runners on first and second. That gave Mark Gross, who threw 131 pitches over the first eight innings, the win (2-4).

Wooster seemed to take control of the second game with a four-run fourth. After Ostendorf opened the frame with a double deep into the left-field corner, Solomon belted his fourth career home run. A pair of walks put runners on first and second, and later, Wielansky delivered his second triple of the afternoon, this time into the corner in right, to make it a 5-1 score.

Case Western Reserve bounced right back with a decisive top of the fifth, with the eight runs coming across on just five hits – four of them singles – as an error and four walks helped doom the Scots. The big blow came with the bases loaded and two outs, when Aaron Cain tripled into the left-center gap to turn the Spartans' 6-5 advantage into 9-5.

The visitors scored three more times in the sixth, with the highlight being a two-run Eric Eldred triple.

Wooster plated a single run in the seventh, courtesy of Joe Superick's first career hit – a single up the middle – that brought in Wielansky, and one more in the eighth.

Pacing the Scots' attack was Lackner with a four-hit day (4-for-8), while Wielansky combined to go 3-for-5 with two walks.

Cain went 7-for-10 on the day, including a perfect 5-for-5 effort during the opener.

The Mideast Region rivals will play a third game on Sunday at Case Western Reserve's Nobby Ballpark. First pitch is slated for 1 p.m.
