Scots Sweep NCAC Player-of-the-Week Honors

Nanak Saran
Michael Wielansky

The College of Wooster baseball team swept the North Coast Athletic Conference weekly awards on Monday with freshman shortstop Michael Wielansky slugging his way to Player-of-the-Week honors and sophomore right-hander Nanak Saran hurling his way to Pitcher-of-the-Week accolades.

Wielansky played a big role in helping Wooster to a 6-1 mark last week, including six NCAC East Division wins to help the Fighting Scots clinch the top spot in the division. The shortstop hit a combined .429 (12-for-28) at the plate while recording an extra-base hit in six of the seven games. He slugged an even 1.000 for the week with three doubles, two triples, and three home runs. Wielansky, who had 13 RBIs and scored eight times on the week, hit a grand slam during the Fighting Scots' 14-2 victory over Oberlin College on Saturday.

Saran won both of his starts on the hill last week, and extended his consecutive scoreless streak to 20 innings in wins over Kenyon College and Oberlin. Saran held Kenyon scoreless for seven innings during Wednesday's 12-1 win before firing a five-hit nine-inning shutout against the Yeomen in a 6-0 win on Sunday. In the two games, Saran struck out 10 batters.

The duo are the first Scots to earn weekly honors from the NCAC this year.

Wooster (26-9) returns to action with home-and-home non-conference tilts against Otterbein University (25-7) this week. The Scots travel to Westerville, Ohio for a 4 p.m. game on Tuesday, prior to hosting the Cardinals at 4 p.m. on Wednesday.
