Jay DiBacco sidebar

Throughout the spring and summer, we'll be honoring our senior student-athletes with a "Senior Salute" series. Today's featured senior is Jay DiBacco, a biology major from Strasburg, Ohio. DiBacco is a member of the baseball team.

Q: Why did you choose to attend The College of Wooster?
A: The baseball program has always had a very good reputation for being elite each year and I wanted to be a part of that. The academics are also top-tier, and with small class sizes, the ability to interact with professors was a great plus.

Q: What does it mean to you to be a Fighting Scot student-athlete?
A: It means that I carry a responsibility to represent the College in a way that places Wooster in a positive light, both on and off the field.

Q: What are some of your favorite memories as a student at The College of Wooster?
A: My favorite memories at The College of Wooster all revolve around the friends that I have made both on the baseball team and in the campus community. There have been too many fun times around campus, in our Gault Schoolhouse room, in the locker room, and up on the hill (Art Murray Field) to point to specific memories.

Q: What's the best part about being a student-athlete at The College of Wooster?
A: I think the best part about being a student-athlete at the College is how I have the opportunity to compete both in the classroom and on the baseball field. My peers, both academically and athletically, push me to be the best that I can be.

Q: What else were you involved with on campus besides your sport?
A: I have been a member of the Wooster "Stat Crew" since my freshman year and have been involved with the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee since my junior year.

Q: Which College of Wooster faculty or staff member has made the greatest impact on you and why?
A: Kevin Smith, the director of athletic communication, has made the greatest impact on me during my time at the College. I have worked under him on the Wooster "Stat Crew" since my freshman year. I admire his dedication and passion he shows while doing his job. It is evident in everything he does.

Q: What other people or resources impacted your Wooster experience in a positive way and how did these people/resources set you up to be successful at Wooster?
A: The summer after my freshman year, I obtained an internship through the APEX Fellowship program. I was able to work at a physical therapy clinic that summer and gained a ton of work experience and knowledge about my future career.

Q: Tell us a bit about your Independent Study project?
A: I am examining whether or not specialization in baseball as a youth athlete will have an effect on injuries sustained later in their athletic career. I sent a survey to many other college and professional baseball players to collect my data.

Q: Tell us a bit about something cool you did as a student at The College of Wooster?
A: We earned a spot in the World Series in Appleton, Wisconsin, my freshman year. To get there, we won the Mideast Regional in Adrian, Michigan. This was such a cool experience flying to Appleton and knowing that we were one of the eight best teams in the country.

Q: Reflecting back on your time at Wooster, what is one piece of advice you would give your first-year (freshman) self?
A: I would tell myself to just be more confident in myself and to not second-guess all the decisions that I make.
