Senior Salute: Evan Faxon

Evan Faxon Sidebar Q&A

Throughout the spring and summer, we'll be honoring our senior student-athletes with a "Senior Salute" series. Today's featured senior is Evan Faxon, a biochemistry and molecular biology major from Cleveland Hts., Ohio. Faxon is a member of the baseball team.

Q: Why did you choose to attend The College of Wooster?
A: Wooster offers a great academic experience, while also having an incredible baseball program. It's hard to find schools with such a great balance.

Q: What does it mean to you to be a Fighting Scot student-athlete?
A: It means a lot to be a part of the tradition of Wooster baseball. Getting the chance to play for Coach (Tim) Pettorini was a huge honor, and I'm proud to be part of this program and continue to compete for championships.

Q: What are some of your favorite memories as a student at The College of Wooster?
A: A lot of my favorite memories have to do with being on the baseball team. Whether it was going to the Div. III World Series, winning the regional on our home field, or just hanging out with the team, this team has been a huge part of my time at The College of Wooster.

Q: What's the best part about being a student-athlete at The College of Wooster?
A: Getting to continue to play the sport I love while getting a great education.

Q: What else were you involved with on campus besides your sport?
A: I'm a member of Tri-Beta, the national biology honors club.

Q: Which College of Wooster faculty or staff member has made the greatest impact on you and why?
A: My Independent Study advisor, Dr. (Dean) Fraga has really helped me with my I.S. project, and just generally supporting me during a difficult year due to the ongoing pandemic. He has really helped me stay on track with my I.S. and continue to get the most out of that experience despite the limitations that are present this year.

Q: What other people or resources impacted your Wooster experience in a positive way and how did these people/resources set you up to be successful at Wooster?
A: My coaches, Coach (Barry) Craddock and Coach (Matthew) Johnson, along with Coach P and all of the assistants, have had a tremendous impact on my time at Wooster. All of them have put my teammates and I first and looked out for our best interests, allowing us to succeed on and off the field.

Q: Tell us a bit about your Independent Study project?
A: My I.S. focuses on arginine kinase function in C. elegans and determining how these proteins produced in the nematodes impact muscle function. There are similar proteins produced in mammals, so understanding how they work in a more basic organism could help us better understand muscle physiology in humans

Q: Tell us a bit about something cool you did as a student at The College of Wooster?
A: As a first-year, my team had a great postseason run, where we won the Mideast Regional and attended the Div. III World Series in Appleton, Wisconsin. It was an incredible experience getting to play in the World Series games. I think this really showed me the level that the team is used to competing at, and encouraged me and my teammates to expect this level of success every year.

Q: Reflecting back on your time at Wooster, what is one piece of advice you would give your first-year (freshman) self?
A: My advice would be to really make the most of my time at Wooster. With being sent home at the end of last year and all the restrictions put in place due to COVID this year, I feel like a lot of the things I would normally take for granted I am more appreciative of and glad that I got to do them in past years.
