Senior Salute: Zach Schuch

Zach Schuch sidebar Q&A

Throughout the spring and summer, we'll be honoring our senior student-athletes with a "Senior Salute" series. Today's featured senior is Zach Schuch, a business economics major from Wooster, Ohio. Schuch is a member of the baseball team.

Q: Why did you choose to attend The College of Wooster?
A: Wooster has strong academics and a great baseball program, along with a thesis project that students can achieve great research and communication skills from completing.

Q: What does it mean to you to be a Fighting Scot student-athlete?
A: It means to be a competitor who represents the Black and Gold to the best of your ability.

Q: What are some of your favorite memories as a student at The College of Wooster?
A: Two of my favorite memories are eliminating Denison University from the 2018 North Coast Athletic Conference Tournament and I.S. Monday. Unfortunately, the past year, and this year's I.S. Monday, did not live up to the same tradition due to COVID.

Q: What's the best part about being a student-athlete at The College of Wooster?
A: The ability to get away from the distraction of school and just play the sport you cherish with your friends.

Q: What else were you involved with on campus besides your sport?
A: I am a member of the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee and a game operations worker for football and basketball.

Q: Which College of Wooster faculty or staff member has made the greatest impact on you and why?
A: Coach P(ettorini) and Doc (current head coach Barry Craddock) have made an impact on me by developing me to do whatever in life I choose to do at the best of my abilities. They've had successful careers, and I believe they are helping their players to the best of their abilities.

Q: What other people or resources impacted your Wooster experience in a positive way and how did these people/resources set you up to be successful at Wooster?
A: My advisor Dr. (Amyaz) Moledina has helped, and offered help, in many processes for me in my college career. Dr. (Melanie) Long, my Independent Study advisor, has helped me further my I.S., and I can't wait to be finished. The Scot Center management group, consisting of Jeff Bricker, Cassidy Wertman, Lydia Spidell, and Corey Beckett, have been great supervisors and supported me through my college years at Wooster.

Q: Tell us a bit about your Independent Study project?
A: Did you know the top ten earning games in 2018 were free? My topic involves understanding the profit-making monetization method of free-to-play games and how they earn more revenue per player than premium games. I have yet to start the empirical side of this thesis, as this is done in the second semester. I'm intrigued to configure data to understand how a big company like Epic Games' Fortnite crushed the free-to-play game sector.

Q: Tell us a bit about something cool you did as a student at The College of Wooster?
A: I volunteered as a prom date for the Tim Tebow Foundation Night to Shine event and had a wonderful time escorting my date around the fun activities. My date knew all the songs and was outsinging me. It was a great time.

Q: Reflecting back on your time at Wooster, what is one piece of advice you would give your first-year (freshman) self?
A: I would just say know what desired career you want to get in before taking unneeded classes.
