CoSIDA NCAA Div. III Baseball Academic All-America® Release

The College of Wooster's Tyler Chumita was voted to the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Academic All-America® Team, which was announced by the national organization on Tuesday. The Fighting Scots' junior shortstop was a second-team selection.

"Tyler had a phenomenal year for us and is so deserving of this honor," shared head coach Barry Craddock. "I'm proud of how Tyler played, but even more so of how he led as a captain."

Chumita's selection marks the second straight year Wooster's had an Academic All-American® from its tradition-rich baseball program. Alumnus Harry Witwer-Dukes earned third-team honors in 2020. In all, Chumita's the 52nd all-time Academic All-American® selection at the College and the sixth from the baseball team.

This spring, Chumita turned in one of the top offensive seasons in program history, and that resulted in the education and mathematics major earning third-team All-America honors from the America Baseball Coaches Association. Chumita hit .465 (59-for-127) in 38 games, with the average ranking as the fifth-highest in single-season program history. The shortstop's .560 on-base percentage was even more impressive, as it's the third-highest in program history and was 10th in NCAA Div. III this spring. Chumita had top-15 statistical rankings this spring in average and hit-by-pitches (17), and he led the NCAC in average and on-base percentage, while also ranking in the top-three in hits, runs (42), and doubles (17). Among his other awards were first-team ABCA All-Mideast Region, second-team D3baseball.com All-Mideast Region, and All-North Coast Athletic Conference East Division honors.

Chumita hit .500 (23-for-46) with 18 RBI, 11 runs, seven doubles, a homer, and a .537 on-base percentage in 11 contests against regionally-ranked tames. Four of those showings came against Case Western Reserve University, and Chumita went 7-for-17 with nine RBI, three runs, two doubles, a walk, and a stolen base during that set, which resulted in the shortstop earning NCAC Athlete of the Week honors. Chumita reached base safely in 32 straight games this year, marking the team's longest run, and he led the Scots with 20 multi-hit games.

Off the field, Chumita's part of Athletes InterVarsity and he volunteers with the kids program at Cypress Wesleyan Church. He's also volunteered with the "General's Club" at nearby Cornerstone Elementary School and with the Night to Shine prom events for those with special needs in Wooster.
