Pett Walks Off Oberlin, Then Closes Out Yeomen, as Scots Get Key NCAC Sweep

Nick Pett, Wooster Baseball WOOSTER, Ohio – College of Wooster baseball first-year Nick Pett was Wednesday's hero in both games of a sweep over Oberlin College, first with a walk-off single, then with a save in his collegiate pitching debut. Wooster rallied with a three-run ninth inning to take game one 5-4, then held off Oberlin 5-3 in the nightcap at Art Murray Field.

Wooster (18-8, 7-3 North Coast Athletic Conference) nailed Oberlin (6-19, 2-8 NCAC) closer Vince Dolcemaschio, hanging three runs on him without recording an out in the ninth inning. Senior Michael Thomas said hello to Dolcemaschio with a leadoff double, then advanced to third on a wild pitch. Senior shortstop Tyler Chumita laced a game-tying two-run single to center field after the Scots loaded the bases, then Pett, who was pinch hitting, delivered the walk-off knock to right field.

Wooster certainly had its chances in game one, stranding 18 runners, including at least two in every inning. Prior to stranding a pair in the first, Chumita's RBI double to left plated senior center fielder Ben Gbur, who was hit by a pitch, then stole second. In the fourth inning, Wooster scored a run on a rare 5-6-3 groundout. Senior right fielder Ben Hines hit a shot that deflected off Oberlin third baseman Max Cairo's glove, but shortstop Harry Kaplan fielded the ricochet in time to get the Scots' speedster at first.

A three-run seventh inning had Oberlin up 5-3. Right fielder Jake Freed's two-run double was the big hit in the inning for the Yeomen.

Junior Ethan Samangy earned his first win of the year. The right-hander recorded the final two outs of the ninth inning after classmate Owen Barnard worked 1 1/3 innings of scoreless relief. Sophomore Corey Knauf started and allowed one run on six hits in his six innings on the bump.

Dolcemaschio dropped to 2-4 on the year.

Senior left fielder Dominic Stilliana's double down the left field line knocked in the go-ahead run in Wednesday's nightcap. Sophomore pinch hitter Jack Henderson led off the inning with a walk, then first-year pinch runner Leo Widtmann motored around the bases on Stilliana's knock.

In the eighth, junior second baseman Eli Westrick's RBI single plated an insurance run. Hines led off the inning by singling through the left side, then moved up 180 feet on Chumita's double.

Cairo's RBI single in the top of the fourth inning gave Oberlin a 3-2 lead in game two, and Wooster escaped further damage when Hines tracked down a liner off the bat of first baseman Max Anastasio in center. Later, Thomas scooped up a would-be wild pitch in time to throw out Cairo at second base to end the sixth inning, Westrick started a 4-6-3 double play that got the Scots out of a bases-loaded jam in the seventh, and Pett recorded the final two outs of the game with the tying run on base.

Senior Dylan Carr (3-2) held Oberlin scoreless in 4 1/3 innings of relief. Ben Brewster (0-2) took the loss after allowing a run on 1 2/3 innings.

Chumita went 4-for-7 with four RBI, and the senior hit his team-leading fourth home run of the year in the nightcap. Of note, Gbur logged his 20th stolen base on the year, the most since alumnus Jake Fling and 2018 Div. III Position Player of the Year Michael Wielansky each swiped 20 in 2017.

Cairo went 5-for-9 with three RBI.

With the sweep, Wooster is now in a tie for fourth-place in the NCAC with Wittenberg University (19-7, 7-3 NCAC)

Next, Allegheny College (18-7, 6-2) comes to Art Murray Field for a noon doubleheader on Saturday, April 23.
